It is stated that 18,000 people in all parts of the colony have signed the petition in favor of Mr Fox’s Local Option Bill. William Dixon, a coloured man, was knocked down on the railway line, near Mosgiel, yesterday, and seriously injured. It is stated that a large number of those who have settled along the Port Chalmers line are desirous of selling their properties, in con•sequence of the increased railway rates. A petition is now in circulation in favour of the Strath I'aieri railway line. It states that the line will open up 500,U0U acres of Crown lands, comparatively level, and (it for the plough, also that the petitioners are satisfied that it will pay the working expenses immediately on construction. The municipality mania shows no signs of abatement. The boundaries of the proposed West Harbor Municipality have been determined upon, and it has been ascertained that tli ie are more than enough houses to satisfy the requirements of the Act. A petition is now in course of signature, and will be forwarded to Wellington on Saturday.
