The brig Sea Spray, from Newcastle, and Lizzie Guy, from Hokitika, were in sight from the Heads when our express left port to-duy. The Queensland, for Newcastle, and Island Lily, for the Chathams, sailed last night, and theChavyhdis and Ellertou, both for Auckland, this morning. A fresh sou’-wester sprang up yesterday afternoon, and tho signal was made to let go second anchor to the Ocean Chief, the only vessel lying in the stream. The Sarah and Mary, stranded at Sumner, was successfully floated at high water on Saturday night, through the exertions of Mr J. Day, pilot, and the crew of the vessel. She lost her false keel, besides other damage, and will probably have to go to Lyttelton for repairs as soon as she has discharged the remainder of her cargo of stone from the Amuri. About 25 tons had to ho thrown overboard to lighten her. The bar was smooth all night. The steamer Murray when off the Hoaphy (eight miles south of Rock’s Point), fell in with the steamer Lyttelton, burning a blue light as a signal for the Murray to come to her assistance, and on going alongside it was found that one ol the firemen, named Barnes, had had one of his fingers taken off by the machinery, and Captain Scott wished him taken hack to Nelson. A boat was accordingly lowered, and the man placed on hoard the Murray, and brought on by her to Nelson. NARROW ESCAPE OF THE BARQUE MALAY’. The p.s. Titan, on arrival from Pigeon Bay yesterday afternoon, where she had been with the mails in place of the s.s. Akaroa, which is absent, reported that the barque Malay, bound for Wellington with produce, lying at the heads, in company with other outward hound crafts, had a very narrow escape. It seems that when the sou’-wester sprang up she dragged her anchor and drifted right in close to the North Head. As the Titan was steaming for Lyttelton on her return she noticed the Malay’s ensign was flying Union down, and at once steered for her and gave welcome assistance. For nearly two hours she remained alongside, and the wind then luckily moderating, she took her in tow and took her to a secure berth between the heads, leaving her securely anchored. Before this is printed the Malay will probably he well on her way to Wellington, hut the escape was an exceedingly narrow one, as had nut tho Titan arrived at the nick of time she must have gone on the rocks and become a complete wreck.
