Sir Stafford Northcote, in replying to a question, said a special vote for the despatch of troops to the Mediterranean would not bo required, but it was not necessary to explain the intention of the Government on the subject before the prorogation. The Treasurer has given notice of motion for Thursday in the Assembly that as the contractors for the Pacific service are unable to carry out the forked service the House approves of the modification proposed by the late Ministry. A vote of censure has been carried against the Tasmanian Ministry, who have resigned. (Per Wakatipu, via Wellington.) Sydney, July 28. A number of spurious bank notes are in circulation in Sydney. There is a proposal before the Assembly to make the honorarium £3OO per annum. Melbourne. A new loan will probably be proposed by the Government for defence and railway purposes. Owing to the ill-health of Sir Redmond Barry, he will not return to the colony until the full period of his leave expires. Spark lias been scratched for the Melbourne Cup. The Commissioners for the Paris Exhibition report that there is not time to hold a preliminary exhibition, but they call attention to the desirability of holding an intercolonial exhibition in Sales of wheat at 7s 5d to 7s sld ; Hour is selling freely at £ls 15s. Large sales ol Devoe’s oil have been made at 15s sd. Brisbane. A motion to repeal the duty on hemp has been curried in the Legislative Assembly, but the mot ion todreduce by one-half the duty on leaf tobacco was withdrawn. INTERPRO VINCI AL. [prom oxjr own correspondent.] Trades Demonstration in Dunedin. Dunedin, August 3. Two thousand people arc expected to take part in the Trades Demonstration to-morrow. The following resolutions will be proposed, “ That the system adopted by the Government of importing manuufactured material required for public works is not only injurious to the number of artisans kilo in New Zealand at present, but detrimental to the interests of the country at large.” “ That it is the duty of the Government to do all iu its power to keep capital in tiic colony, and that the system at present carrricd out of importing that which can be manufactured tiers, i§ nut the means by which that desirable object can be obtained, but the policy is more likely lo impoverish than enrich the colony’.’ " That New Zealand can prolitably manufacture roiling stock and bridge materials, required tor the public service.” Mr Dixon captains our i'ootbaiiers.
