THE MUNICIPAL CONFERENCE AT WELLINGTON.

The Municipality representatives met today, and appointed the ex-Mayor of Christchurch chairman, who, in his opening address, expressed regret at the want of finality in the Government measures required by abolition, and said these constant changes would soon make people regret passing the Abolition Act. They meet to-morrow morning. The following notices of motion were given:— Mr Steward —“That the chairman bo requested to procure for the use of the conference sufficient copies of tho Municipal Corporations Act, 187(>, and the Charitable Institutions Bill, 1877.” Mr Standish —“That the chairman write and request Government to be good enough to inform the conference upon what basis of calculation pro rata, the deductions for the maintenance of charitable institutions and hospitals out of subsidies payable to Municipal Corporations have been made, and are in(ended to be made for the future, and whether the subsidies payable to County Councils and Road Boards have been and wall be liable to same deductions.”

Mr Thomson, on Friday—“ That in the opinion of tho conference the number of resident householders in a district proposed to be formed int o a borough should be reduced from 150, as provided by the Municipal Corporations Act, 3876, to 100.” Mr Steward—(l) “ That it be recommended that provision should be made for dispensing with the necessity of reference to His Excellency the Governor in the mat ter of the renewal and transfer of municipal leases.” (2) “ That steps be taken to vest direct in municipalities the municipal reserves now held under Crown grants to Superintendents, anil which now vest in trust in his Excellency the Governor.” (6) “That this conference take into consideration the advisability of asking receipts given by municipalities for stamping, that legislative provision bo mad& exempt fvoaa duty.” (?)
