ASTRONOMICAL NOTES FOR AUGUST.
There is little difference between tliis and the last month, except that Venus is returning from her great northern declination, and as she gets more southern becomes more brilliant. Jupiter will be on the meridian a little before 9 p.m., and at the same time Mars and Saturn will have emerged from the eastern horizon, as they have nearly the same right ascension, but Mars has nearly 4 degrees more southern declination. The sun is in the sign Leo, and will be until the 22nd, when he enters Virgo, having nearly 12 degrees of northern declination. The length of day on the Ist will be about 9h 36m, and on the 15th about lOh 10m. The phases of the moon will be as follows: — Last quarter 2d 9h 51m p.m. New moon 9h 4h 48m p.m. First quarter 16h Oh 59m a.m. Full moon 24d lOh 41m a.m. The moon will be nearest to the earth on the 9th at lOh p.m., and at the greatest distance from the earth on the 23rd at Oh p.m. Both sun and moon will be eclipsed during the month, but the former is confined to the northern regions and the latter takes place at our mid-day, consequently both are invisible here. Mercury, lid 3h a.m., Will be in conjunction with the moon. Mercury, ldejr. 27niin. north Hid :;h p.m. ill descending node ; 2b'd 7h p.m. at greatest distance from the sun, and on the old Oh p.m. at greatest elongation, 27deg smin east. Venus, a bright evening star all the mouth, and on tin; lid 2h p.m. will be in conjunction with the moon; Venus. 2deg 49min north. Mars, 7d 4h p.m., will be stationary; 22d 5h a.m. nearest to the sun; 26d2ha.m. in conjunction with the moon; Mars Bdeg 46min south, and on the 28d Oh p.m. in conjunction with Saturn; Mars, 4dcg 32miu south. Jupiter, lSd 8h p.m. will be in conjunction with, the moon: Jupiter, odeg 2vniu north, and on the 21 d 2h a.m. stationary. Saturn, 26d lh a.m. will be in conjunction with the moon: Saturn, 4dcg 14min south. Uranus, 18d lOh a.m. will be in conjunction with the sun. Neptune, lOd 7h p.m. will be stationary.
