A large number of members put in an appearance on Cranmer Square on Saturday, to contest the return match Boaters v Cricketers. During the first part of the game the latter were considerably over-matched in point of numbers, consequently the Boaters had things pretty much their own way for some little time, but us the afternoon advanced the Cricketers’ side was strengthened by several fresh arrivals and the play became very close and even. of the second their opponents scored half-a-point. Before the close of the last spell the Boaters managed to add another half-point to their score, but beyond this there was no definite result on either side, a good afternoon’s sport finally terminating in favor of the Boating interest by two points to half-a-point. A general meeting of the members of the Christchurch Football Club was held on Saturday evening, at the Commercial Hotel, for the purpose of appointing a selection commit tee re the forthcoming match with a visiting team from Dunedin. The Captain, Mr J. R. Evans, occupied the chair, and after the objects of the meeting had been explained, a letter was read from Mr A. Cargill, hon. sec. of the Dunedin Football Club, stating that the team about to visit Canterbury and the Northern provinces would be a Dunedin team, and not a team representing the whole of Otago, consequently they would expect to meet local fifteens in each place. After suggesting that care should be taken to have the ground in good playing order, stating that their colours were red and black, and that they would play the Rugby Union game, the Dunedin secretary gave the proposed route, which was as follows : —“ The team will leave Dunedin for Oamaru on Sunday, the sth of August, arrive in Christchurch on the 6th, and play on Wednesday, the Bth. Leave for Taranaki on the 9th ; arrive at Taranaki on the 13th, Auckland on the 14th, and play at the latter place on the 15th : leave Auckland on the 16th, and play at Nelson on the 20th ; arrive and play in Wellington about the 25th; from thence return to Temuka, and play on the 27th, and Timaru on the 28th. A letter was also read from the secretary of the South bridge club, asking if a team would be willing to play a fifteen at Southbridge on the 9th hist. It was agreed that the challenge be accepted, provided a sufficient number could get away on the date mentioned. A number of gentlemen were then proposed to act as a selection committee re the contest with the Dunedin team, and on a ballot being taken, Messrs J. R. Evans, R. J. S. Harman, and W. Hartland were declared to be duly elected. This concluding the business of the evening the meeting then adjourned.
