The steam collier City of Hobart, on her voyage from Newcastle to Melbourne, broke her shaft near Wilson’s Promontory, and foundered. All hands were saved. William (lambic was crushed to death at Tairua by a boulder rolling down on him. Wellington, July 27. The survey of the three-masted schooner Fairlie revealed serious injuries. The vessel was much strained throughout the decks. Her deck beams and fastenings are started. Sixty sheets of copper are torn off her bottom or indented, showing damage to the frames. Tenders for repairs have been called for. Lawrence, July 27. Mr Bastings was elected chairman of the Tuapeka County Council to-day. He leaves for Wellington to-morrow. [prom the correspondents op the press.] Schooner Missing. Timaru, July 27. Fears are entertained for the safety of the three-masted schooner Annie Bau, which left Newcastle for Timaru five weeks ago. Mr J. L. Hall concludes a most successful season at the Theatre Royal to-morrow evening, and leaves for Dunedin the same night. Dunedin, July 27. There was considerable excitement at Lawrence as to the appointment of County Chairman. Mr Clayton declined, as did two others, to stand. Thus the contest was reduced to between Bastings and Brown. The former secured five, the latter four votes, A Bastingite being in the chair had the casting vote. Mr Bastings declines to accept any salary. The result of the town hall plans competition will be announced on Tuesday. The special committee had only five sets of designs submitted to them, the Council having decided to affirm the rejection of others. It is not probable that the new Council will sanction any expenditure for municipal buildings, as a great strain on the funds is required to meet improvements required in gas and water supplies. It is generally believed the Council will be forced to increase the rate tins year to eighteenpence.
