Poetry by Cable, —The following paragraph from a Philadelphia paper illustrates the extent to which the telegraphic cable is being used by the American Press : —A poem by Tennyson is an event in the literary world, although he has written a good deal more than his quota recently. The sonnet addressed to Victor Hugo, which we publish to-day, will appear in the forthcoming number of the “ Nineteenth Century, and was cabled to this country by the London correspondent of the “ New York Herald.” It has no doubt suffered by the sea voyage, but the “ Herald ” is none the loss entitled to credit for its enterprise in a new field. Extraordinary Fish. —An extraordinary fish was lately picked up on the Little Waimangaroa beach, Karamea district, by Mr Alexander McDonald on Tuesday last, of which the following description is furnished by the “Westport Times”: —Length, 14ft. 4in. ; girth, 2ft. 7in. ; one dorsal fin extending from head to tail; from the top of the head there extended ten feelers, each Ift. in length, and two similar appendages, about 2ft. in length, grew underneath the jaw, resembling in appearance the feelers of a lobster ; on each side of the head there was one small fin, and the gills of the fish resemble those of a turbot; the body was of bright silvery hue, and covered with fine scales ; the shape of the body being more flat than round ; the eyes resembled those of a cod fish. When found it had only recently been stranded, as it was not quite dead. Tliis is probably some large species of frost fish. f dMrtisemrrfs, ABRIDGED PROSPECTUS OF THE UNION FIRE AND MARINE INSURANCE COMPANY OF NEW ZEALAND.
