The Mary Ann Annison did good work yesterday, taking in cargo rapidly. The Lady Don went into the stream yesterday to await first fair wind. Captain Laurence Williams, of the schooner Leonidas, was lately found dead, lying on the beach in Warrnambool harbor. At an inquest held the evidence showed that he had been unsteady in his habits since his arrival from Newcastle. The deceased has left a wife and family residing at Emerald-hill, Melbourne. The steamship Saratoga, while being launched in Delaware River, at Chester, Philadelphia, on the 22nd May, started prematurely while forty men were under her blocking her up on ways, and many were dragged into the water. Most escaped with slight injuries, but eight were killed and two mortally wounded. The dead were horribly mutilated. One of the oldest of the retired shipmasters resident in South Shields has passed away at the age of 78 in the person of Captain William Carter. The deceased had sailed between the Tyne and the Thames for sixty-two years, and only came ashore about seven years ago. He commanded the Waterhouse for thirty-nine years, and when at last that vessel was lost she had been afloat for sixty years. Captain Carter was a nephew of the illustrious Captain Cook, the discoverer, by his sister, Margaret Cook. The reason why the Torres Straits mail steamer Normanby was refused pratique at Cooktown appears to he a grave one. During the passage four fatal cases of Asiatic cholera occurred, the last death taking place during the present month. The Normanby, on arriving at Townsville, was placed in quarantine. ARRIVAL OF THE SHIP WAIKATO.
The New Zealand Shipping Company's ship Waikato, Captain Worster, was sig nailed early this morning, but was still out s de the heads when our express left port. There was only a light wind outside, and the Titan went down shortly after noon to tow her up, with the manager and some of the directors of the company aboard. She left Plymouth on May stb, and is therefore eighty-two days out.
