MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH.^ Wednesday, July 25. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.)" Drunk and Disorderly. —George Brown was fined 20s, and Timothy Sullivan 10s. Two inebriates were each fined ss. Murder.— Carl Kehde and Elizabeth Lynch were brought up on remand. Mr Joynt appeared for the accused. Inspector Eeast asked for a further remand until the following day, to allow of the evidence being completed at the inquest, which would be resumed at the Hospital at 2 p.m. Remanded until the 26th.
LYTTELTON. Wednesday, July 25. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness. —Richard Dey, arrested by Constable Johnstone, was fined 205., or, in default, ninety-six hours hard labor. Breach of the Peace. —John Watorson and James Gi’oat, arrested by Constable Moutray, were each fined 20s, or, in default, three days’ hard labor, tor lighting in the public street. Larceny Under £5. —Henry South was accused of stealing a gold ring, the property of Wm. McLeod. Detective Sm th said that on Tuesday evening he received information that a man living at Tonkin’s boarding-house, London street, had had a ring stolen from him. He arrested prisoner at one of the public-houses in town. Prisoner denied the offence, saying that he (i)eteclivc Smith) bad a down on him. He had ascertained that prisoner had sold the ring stolen from McLeod to a young man named Messite, whom he had seen in Mr Rossi - ter’s watchmaker’s shop on Wednesday last. Wm. McCloud, sworn, said—l reside at Tonkin’s Boarding House; prisoner also lived there. On Thursday night prisoner slept in the same room with me. He left next morning. On Sunday morning I missed the ring. I had left it in my waistcoat pocket hanging over the bed. There was an old man also in the place. I last saw the ring on the Wednesday previous. The ring produced is the one, it cost originally (three years ago) £2 10s, John Messiter, sworn, said —-1 last sary prisoner on Friday morning at Mr Rossiter’s shop. He offered the ring for sale to Mr Rossiter, saying he wanted money to go to Christchurch. Mr Rossiter said he had no money, but perhaps the young man would buy it, referring to me. I gave him 3s 6d for the ring. I did not know the ring was cheap, and only bought it to enable prisoner to go to Christchurch. The prisoner stated that coming ashore from the Mary Ann Annison he met two men, one of which sold him the ring for 3s. The Bench sentenced accused to four months’ imprisonment, with hard labor, his statement not being in any way supported. Civil Cases. —Dransfield and Roper v owners of Primera, claim £ls ; Mr 11. N. Nalder for defendant; adjourned for three weeks to allow evidence of Primera’s officers to be taken in Wellington. Cathro v Johnson, claim £8 9s 6d ; Mr H. N. Nalder for plaintiff ; judgment for amount claimed, costs 12s, solicitor’s fee, 21s.
