The Suez Mail. —The Ringarooma, with the Suez mail, left Melbourne on Monday. Entertainment at Sumner. —The popular entertainment to be given at Sumner for the benefit of the church organ fund takes place to-morrow (Thursday) evening. Supreme Court Reform. —The New Zealand “ Times” gives currency to a report that the Government, acting on the recommendations of the Judges, intend to introduce a measure for the reconstitution or reform of the Supreme Court, based on the English Judicature Acts. Wheat-growing in Hawke’s Bay.— A farming correspondent of the Hawke’s Bay “ Herald ” informs that journal that the amount of wheat that will be put in in Hawke’s Bay this year will be about ten times that put in last year. Telegraphic Facilities. —in Victoria telegraphic messages are now delivered free of cost within a radius of a mile and a half in any direction from any post-office. Formerly messages were only delivered free within a mile of the receiving station. St Andrew’s Entertainment. —A lecture on “Characteristics of British Poetry” will be given by the Rev. R. Waddell in St Andrew’s schoolroom this evening, at eight o’clock. Selections of music will be rendered at intervals by the choir. Gaslit Railway Carriages. —We notice that experiments are now being made with regard to the lighting of the carriages on the Victorian railways by gas instead of oil. In six months at the latest Mr Woods expects that the scheme will be in operation. Sydney is beforehand in this matter. The railway carriages there are already being fitted with gaslights. The Catholic Bishopric of Auckland. —A private letter from a New Zealand gentleman, at present in England, to an Auckland gentleman, says “ The Catholic Bishopric of Auckland was offered to an Irishman named Dr. Dickson, a relation of the Primate of Ireland, but after two days’ consideration he refused the offer.” Government Insurance —Mr Henry Clapcott has been re-transferred from Christchurch to Wellington as chief agent of the Government Insurance Department. He left Christchurch yesterday, and has been succeeded here by Mr T. L. Shepherd, who has for some time been officiating as chief agent in Wellington. Coaching. —The Wellington “Argus” understands that Mr Andrew Young has almost completed negotiations for the sale of his coach service, mail contract, and plant on the line between Wellington and Wanganui. The name of the purchaser has not transpired. Novelty in Dioramas. —Mr Bacheldcr, , the well-known exhibitor of dioramas, is at present travelling in Australia with a diorama of the recent Arctic Expedition, and is expected in New Zealand in the course of a month or two. It comprises views depicting bear-hunting, sleighing excursions, breaking up the ice, seals, whales, walruses, bears, departure of the expedition for England, &c. Missionary Meeting. —On Monday evening, in St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church, the Sabbath scholars, teachers, and friends met. The Rev. Rutherford Waddell presided in the absence of the Rev. J. Elraslie, pastor of the congregation. An interesting address on Missions was delivered by the Rev. W. H. Horner. The contents of the missionary box, amounting to £l4 14s Ski, were voted by the children to the New Hebrides Mission, in the maintenance of the Dayspring. Dissolving views were afterwards exhibited by Mr Waters, from the Sunday School Union. The Postal 'Department. —It is notified that twenty new post offices have been opened in the colony, including one at Cave, Canterburv. The following offices have been closed : —Albury, Arowhenua, and Drayton.
