Nine thousand Russians have crossed the Danube at Sistova. The Turkish ironclads have bombarded Eupatoria in the Crimea, The British Fleet. J. D. Ormond, the Minister for Public Works: —“ Plans for section between Balclutha axxd Clintoxx are xxow ready, and tenders will be called for withixx a fortnight. Time allowed to complete the contract is not to exceed twelve, moxxths. The xxorthex-u line is all under contract except the Waikouaiti section, which the Government ixxtends shall be completed withixx the time specified for the competioxx of the contracts, and now ixx coux’se of construction on both sides of it. The Goveruxuent x'ecognize the necessity of completing the sectioxx referred to, and will use every exertion to do so as above stated.” From the Hon. the Minister for Public Works tjxe deputatioxx also received the followixxg telegram ; —“ Ixx re the interior railway communication, the surveys have been made to the order of the Govern - meut, but the engineer’s report has not been yet received.” With this precise infox’mation ixx possession, in all probability the gentlemen appointed to form a deputation will not think it xxecessary to proceed to Wellington in the meantime.

A valedictory dinner was given last evening to Mr McKerrow, Assistant-Surveyor-General, in the large room of the City Club. Sir J. C. Richardson was in the chair. The number of friends who thus assembled to do Mr McKerrow honour was very large, nearly 100 persons sitting down to dinner, among them being prominent public men and leading citizens. The dinner was no sooner over than a liberal programme of toasts was commenced, that of “ The guest of the evening” being enthusiastically received. On rising to reply, Mr Mcßerrow was warmly received, and during the evening was the recipient of a testimonial. Mr McKerrow returns shortly to Wellington, where he will reside permanently. [from our own correspondent.] Mrs Reid Acquitted. Dunedin, July 14. Mrs Reid has been acquitted. The jury, after being locked up all night, came into Court at nine this morning, and said there was not the faintest probability of agreeing. The Judge hinted that he w r ould have to lock them up again, and the foreman then asked a quarter of an hour’s respite. At 9.30 the jury again came into Court with a verdict of “ Not Guilty.” Mr Justice Johnston said he hoped the case would be a warning to others.
