The Torres Straits Mail. Sydney, July 11. The news which has been received at Brisbane by the Torres Straits mail is dated London, May 25th. General Malakoff in his report of the capture of Ardahan by the Bussians on May 22nd, states that immense quantities of artillery stores, including twenty-live Krupp guns, were captured, and that large numbers of the Turks were taken prisoners. The admirable fire of the Russian artillery speedily made a breach in the walls. The Turks fled when the assault took place, leaving great numbers dead. The Turkish commandant was ordered before a court martial for not offering a better resistance. In the encounter between a British gunboat and Spanish smugglers at Cainpo, it is said that the smugglers surrendered.

The directors' report for hull'-yen- ending 31st June, stated that during the last few months the company's marine losses had been exceptionally heavy, including the Ocean Mail, Great Queensland, Cairo, and other first-class risks. Provision had been made for these and all other ascertained losses up to the elose of the half-year. The directors hare been enabled to carry £30,000 to the reinsurance fund, which now stands at £IOO,OOO, by the enhanced value accruing. After a careful revaluation of the company's investments, from the available balance, £19,6G5, the directors recommend the payment of a dividend of 15 per cent., leaving a balance of £1605 to be carried forward. The report was adopted without discussion. Sir George Grey left for Wellington in the Wanata to-day. Dr. Willis and other members leave on the 17th by the Hawea, which returns from Wellington for the purpose. The Choral Hall was filled with a fashionable audience today, to witness the presentation of B. A. degrees to Miss Kate Edgar. The chairman of the Board of Education said it Avas the first degree of the kind ever gained by a lady in the British dominions. It was stated at the Waste Lands Board that a new Waste Lands Bill wdl be introduced into Parliament this session. Wellington, July 11 The Supreme Court was occupied all day over the libel case of Henry Anderson, editor of the " Post" v. Gillon, Kent, and Waters, proprietors of the "Argus." Mr Gordon Allan and Dr. Buller were for the plaintiff, and Mr Travers for the defendants. There were two issues. No witnesses were called for the defence, but several were examined for the plaintiff. After an absence of about half an hour the jury found for plaintiff, with 40s damages on one issue, and for the defendant on the other. Each party to the action will have to pay half the costs of the other side. The sum claimed was £SOO. The case was tried by a special jury. At the Court for the revision of the Citizens' roll, last night, about 100 applications to be placed on the roll were not sustained as the names of the applicants were not on the valuation roll. Great disappointment is felt at this decision, but, according to the opinion of eminent lawyers, some other municipalities are deciding otherwise, and any election taking place upon their votes will be voidable. Dunedin, July 11. Mr Hislop, secretary to the Education Board, left for Wellington to-day. He will be absent for three months. The Mayor to-day received a telegram from the Hon. Mr McLean, stating that work would be found for the unemployed on the Clutha and Clinton section. Balcltjtha, July 11. The formation of the Balclutha section of the Clutha railway was commenced by the sub-contractors at several points yesterday. The/ are bound to finish in three months.
