MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, July 10. (Before C. Whitefoord,<jjEsq., R-M.) Drunkenness. —Ellen Thompson, an old offender, was fined 10. LYTTELTON. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Tuesday, July 10. Drunkenness. —John Ford, arrested by Constable Moutray, was fined ss. Absent without Leave. —John Peverett, cook aboard the ship Wanganui, was for this offence, sentenced to one weeks’ imprisonment. Embezzling- Ship’s Cargo. —John Jenkins and James Daly, seamen belonging to the ship Wanganui, were charged with this offence. Constable Moutray said he arrested prisoners aboard the Wanganui at 6 p.m. on Monday. He was shown two cases, one of brandy and one of gin, which had been broken open, and also the bottle of brandy produced, Mr Henderson, chief officer of the ship, said accused were employed between decks on Monday. There were all sorts of spirits stowed in the after part of the between decks when prisoner went to work on Monday morning. At 9 a.m. they went to work being then quite sober, but at 11 a.m. they wore affected by drink. Neither of accused went ashore that day. At noon he observed a case of schnapps broken open, and at 3 p.m. the second officer, Mr J. E. Bones, pointed out to him a case of brandy which had been broached. He sent for the police and gave them in charge. The second officer gave corroborative evidence. Thomas Hodge said he saw prisoners kicking some cases into a cabin, and following Jenkins in, saw him holding a bottle of brandy to his mouth, the bottle produced was the one. The Bench sentenced Jenkins to six weeks’ imprisonment with hard labor, and Daly to three weeks’, the latter having received an excellent character from the officers.
