Singapore, July 3,11.36 p.m. The British squadron has left Greece, under sealed orders. Unofficial Turkish accounts state that the Russian advance guard has been driven back to Biela with heavy loss. Bombay, July 4,11.42 p.m. The Russians are Hying, south of Kars. A Russian despatch states that the Turks have been strongly reinforced from Batoum, and the Russians have been compelled to take a position better calculated for defence. Kars has been almost relieved by the retreat of the Russians. Singapore, Jidy 5, 11.58 a.m. The British squadron has gone to Besika Bay. The Turks retain Rustehuk. The Russian cavalry have reached Senovzry. The Situation of France. Bombay", July 3. An order of the day has been issued in France by Marshal McMahon, in view of the political crisis, which exhorts the'army to defend the dearest interests of the country, and to aid the President in fulfilling his mission to maintain respect for good government,

The San Francisco Mail. Suicide in Wellington. Wellington, July 6. The Government are advised by a San Francisco telegram, that the City of Sydney, with the English mails to the 31st May, left San Francisco for Auckland on June 20tb, the contract date. She is due at Auckland on the 14th. The Taupo sailed South at 12.30 p.m. Passengers —Messrs W. Copland, E. Greetbeach, J. A. Algie, E. Allardyce, J. Connelly, Hobson, M'Donald, Henderson, Ward, Miss Thomas. Charles Grey, confectioner, was this morning sentenced to two months’ imprisonment, without hard labor, for fraudulent insolvency. Thomas C. Brown, civil engineer, lately in the Public Works Department, and engineer on the Hutt line, hung himself this morning with a silk handkerchief to a fence rail, 3ft high, near Johnsonville. New Members of the Upper House. Dunedin, July 6. The Hon. Mr Reynolds at yesterday’s meeting of the Harbor Board suggested that the members should be paid. The matter was referred to the finance committee to report upon. The “Times” states that a list of new Legislative Councillors, which will be gazetted before Parliament meets, will includes the names of Sir Cracroft Wilson, C.8.K.5.1., Thomas Russell, C.M.G., J. Logan Campbell, A.R.C. Strode, and Mr H. B. Gresson. Mr Blair has returned to town after having made a survey of the various railway routes, which are causing so much dispute at present. He will report to the Government at an early date. The steamer Easby from Wellington arrived at Newcastle on the sth.
