THE ToNuARIRO. The side-wheel steamer Tongariro arrived at 10 last night, .'he seems handy and well fitted vessel quite suitable for the trade to Kaiapoi and the Bays. Cap'ain George Cl rke of the XXX, and Mr Monk of Kaiapoi are the owners, and we wish them success in their enterprise. VOYAGE TO CAMPBELL AND AUCKLAND ISLANDS. A recent trip of the schooner Bcncleuch, belonging to Thomson Brothers, of Port Chalmers, is of more than ordinary interest. Some of its incidents are thus described by the Otago Times : Desirous of developing the sealing industry, her owners fitted her out for a cruise to Campbell Island and the Auckland Islands, and, with the junior partner of the firm on board, despatched her on her mission on March 28th last. She was headed for Campbell Island, and arrived there April 6th, and anchored in North Harbor. Seal bunting was at once commenced and persevered with till June 18th, during which time between eighty and ninety seals, hair and fur, were captured. The island was thoroughly explored by the sealers, all the likely places being hunted over, and every harbor visited by the schooner. _ The seals are described as plentiful, but exceedingly wary, the bulk of them haunting places that were absolutely inaccessible, hence the indifferent success obtained. Many whales were seen about the island, but the schooner not. being provided with proper whaling gear, none were taken. Alter remaining at the island till the above date, the party decided to make tor the Auckland Islands, and the schooner sailed for them on the 18th. The weather, however, was against her, ‘or that night it came on to blow heavy from northwest. She was hove-to, and at 2 a.m. on the 10th her jibboom broke short off at the cap. At noon the wind shifted suddenly to the southward, raising a high, confused sea, and at 4 a.m. next day her topmast went; wind and sea increased, and that evening, between 4 and 6 o’clock (she was boarded by the sea, and lost both her sealing boats. Thus crippled, she was headed for head-quarters. Mr Thomson informs us that the depot of stores for castaways at Campbell’s was found and examined, and seemed all right. Four sheep, supposed to be those left by the French war steamer vire, were also seen, and appeared to be Buffering from foot rot. Some wreckage, consisting of part of a ship’s topgallant rail, two or three spars, and pieces of boats, were found on the beach at Monument Harbor, but bore no marks to lead to identification. Whilst the schooner was lying at Perseverance Harbor, the earthquake wave of the 11th May came in, and rolling upon the beach, ten or a dozen feet above highwater mark, swept away a quantity of casks and o*ker material belonging to the sealers.
