SAD OCCURRENCE AT THE ASYLUM.

A Warder Killed by a Patient.

We regret to have to record a very sad occurrence at the Sunnyside Asylum yesterday by which one of the warders, Mr F. White, long and favorably known in connection with the Asylum, lost his life. The circumstances of the affair so far as we can gather as follow :— Shortly after one o’clock Mr White, whose duties were on the outside of the institution was sitting in the kitchen when one of the patients named Price came in. Price asked Mr White for the keys of the wards. Mr White not wishing to irritate Price by refusing point blank, put him off by saying that he had given his keys to another man. Price thereupon took a carving knife off the table and stabbed White in the left side below the heart. The wounded man was placed on a bed and medical assistance sent for immediately. All however that could be done was of no avail, as Mr White died in about twenty minutes after receiving the wound. Price has been in the Asylum as a patient for a long time, and for many years past has been considered perfectly safe, never having been guilty of any act of violence. He has been for a long time employed in outdoor work at the institution, and generally, was the last man who would be suspected of such a deed. An inquest was held this afternoon at the Asylum, but the enquiry was proceeding when we went to press. The unfortunate man White has been a warder at the Asylum for many years, and by his courtesy and attention to his duties had won for himself the good opinion of visitors and the Superintendent of the Asylum.
