SCHOOL COMMITTEES.
COLOMBO ROAD. At a meeting of this committee, held on Tuesday evening last, present —0. Allison (chairman), Revs. EL B. Cocks and J. S. Smalley, Messrs I’ 1 . C. Hall, J. Whitelaw, T. GL Vennall, E. Jones, and J. R. Andrew, a letter was read from'the Board of Education, requesting the committee to superintend the collection of the school fees clue from the district. Tho committee appointed Mr Pillow as collector, and the chairman and Mr Hall were appointed to draw up an agreement and arrange details respecting his duties. The second mistress sent in her resignation on account of her removing from the district. It was resolved to offer the appointment to Miss Helen Connon, who had been appointed on the staff of the school in April last, but whose appointment had not been confirmed by the Board on account of a new scale of salaries and teachers being prepared. A deputation was appointed to wait on tho Board and point out the unfairness of the teachers’ salaries as compared with those paid in other similar schools, and endeavour to get the same rectified. The Chairman reported that he had caused a stove to be fixed in the branch school as authorised by the Board; authority had also been given to procure shingle for the playground. An application from the Wesleyan Church committee for permission to hold a tea meeting in the school was considered, and after considerable discussion granted, subject to certain conditions, tho committee having some time previously decided (on account of the danger from fire, &c), not to allow tho school to be used for such purposes. Tho question of building an infant school was then considered, and after a long discussion as to the desirability or otherwise of building a detached school, it was ultimately resolved to attach the school to the north end of the present buildings, in accordance with a plan produced at the meeting. Mr Lambert was appointed as architect for the same, and Messrs Allison, Whitelaw, and Andrew as a sub-committee to confer with him on the subject. It was resolved to co-operate with the Otago Association for promoting the formation of savings’ banks in connection with the public schools, and after passing accounts the committee adjourned.
