Auckland, June 20. The s.s. Wellington, due on 16th, has not yet made Manukau. The Eootball Club have modified their rules as follows: —No hacking or hacking over, ti'ipping up, strangling, rabbiting or butting shall be allowed under any circumstances whatever.

Napier, June 20.

In the Supreme Court to-day was heard the special jury case, Neal and Close and Hunter, of Wellington, versus- Keith. It is scarcely likely to close to-day. Wilson, of Napier, and Bell, of Wellington, for plaintiffs. G-ordou Allan, of Wellington, and Lee, of Napier, for the defendants. The other two actions (the Telegraph proprietors against the Herald) are withdrawn, in consequence of what fell from the Judge last night, when he refused to certify for costs. He said that the plaintiff would have been wiser if he had not brought the action, that the words relied on did not, in the Judge's opinion, apply to the plaintiff, and that he had suffered no damage. Johnston, M.H.E., unanimously. An amendment that the proposal was inadvisable had been previously'aejected by a majority of ten to one. The question of legislation regarding bills of sale, so as to prevent the defrauding of creditors, was considered. It was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of Mr Johnston, to bring before the House, and to communicate with other Chambers of Commerce throughout the colony on the subject.

Dunedin, June 20, From what, fell from the Chief Commissioner at the'Land Board to-day it would seem that the Land Aet is being evaded daily, and that most of the evils attendant upon the deferred payment system in Victoria are to be met with here. Mr Maitland said the practice of these evils in all directions was coming under his notice daily, and people were trying all sorts of dodges to get rid of their responsibilities under the Act. "Dnmniyisni" was also practised. Mr Butterworth was very sorry to hear the Chief Commissioner's statement, and Mr Green expressed the opinion that the Board should use its utmost endeavors to prevent any evasion _of the Act. This discussion arose in connection with two applications to purchase made by holders of deferred payment leases in the Teviot district. The ratepayers' roll for Dunedin will be reduced by one-half this year through the stringency of the Eating Act. Negotiations for the exchange of a site on the Town belt for the present General Hospital have fallen through. The attention of the City Council has been called to the dilapidated, unsightly, and uncomfortable condition of some of the city cabs, and the necessary authority has been given for a rigid inspection.:

Balclutha, June 20. Mr Duncan, 0.E., has just completed a survey of the Clutha river from Tuapeka Mouth to the bottom of Inchclutha. He will submit his report to a meeting of the Board of Conservators on the 31st, when operations to open up the navigation of the river will be commenced.
