At a meeting of the University Council held tins afternoon, Mr Macandrcw’s motion to spend a £IOOO a year on scholarships for the Otago University, was rejected. The Council resolved to proceed with the erection of new buildings in the old Botanical Gardens, at a cost of £17,000. [from a correspondent of the press.] Hunedin, June 19. Mr Macandrew’s resolutions to set aside £IOOO a year towards scholarships was agreed to in principle by the University Council, but all speakers opposed them on the score of the Council’s inability to spare the money. Mr Harris would have supported the resolution if it had been made to read that any surplus, after providing and fitting up the new building, should be devoted to this purpose. The Yice-Chancellor and the Rev. Mr Stanford both referred to the fact that at the present time some thirty scholarships offered by the New Zealand University went begging. Practically resolutions were negatived. The majority of the Hospital committee, after agreeing to the proposed exchange, refuse to carry out the agreement with the City Council to remove the Hospital to the belt.
There has been another fight in the City Council over the means of exit afforded by the Princess Theatre in case of fire. MiFish succeeded in carrying a resolution limiting the license to a month, to enable the Countil to see if the alterations made proved efficacious.
