MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Saturday, June 16,

(Before J. Ollivier and W. D. Carruthers, Esqs., J.P.’s.)

Drunk and Disorderly. —Peter Thompson, arrested for drunkenness, was discharged with a caution, and an adjourned charge against Margaret Ellison, was further adjourned till 23rd inst. False Pretences. —Edward James Eoulton waa charged on remand with having obtained 12s from Thomas de LaMare by false pretences. Accused had gone to the prosecutor on 14th May last, represented that he had come down from Ashburton to buy some goods for Mr E. Watkins, farmer, there, but that he wanted 12s to complete the purchase of the goods he had ordered. As the prosecutor had previously seen accused at a tea meeting, he gave him the money, for which ho gave a receipt. Prosecutor subsequently learnt that accused had not been authorised to borrow the money. Edward Watkins, called, stated that accused had been working for him during the harvest. He had never authorised him to purchase goods or borrow money on his account. Three other charges were preferred against accused, one for obtaining 11s from E. Salter, of St. Albans, to whom he had reprsented that he had been telegraphed to by William Allen, storekeeper at Ashburton, to purchase goods, and that he had not sufficient money left to take him back from Christchurch. On the strength of this statement, as prosecutor knew Mr Allen, he lent him the money. The other charges were for obtaining goods, for small amounts, from T. Menzie, storekeeper, Selwyn street, Christchurch, and from William Pine, storekeeper, St. Albans, on tire strength of his being in certain employments. The four charges were fully proved against accused, and he was sentenced to three months’ imprisonment on each, or twelve months in all.

Assault. —A summons ucse against W. J. Falloon, for assaulting Iris wife, was adjourned until tire 18th instant.

LYTTELTON. Saturday, June 16. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.I Drunkenness. —W. Johnston, arrested by Constable Bullen, was fined 20s, or, in default, ninetv-six hours’.

Drunkenness and Indecency. —Henry Wade, arrested by Constable Bullen, was fined 10s, or, in default, forty-eight hours’. Refusal or Duty.— Charles Monck, Charles Poulie, Thomas Schroeder, and Albert Drusche, seamen belonging to the German barque Amalie, were charged with this offence. The captain was not present, and the police applied for a remand till Monday. Accused stated that they had asked the captain to allow them to see the German Consul, and he had refused. The Bench remanded the case till Monday. ’
