MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Thursday, June 14. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M.) Dkunkenness. —Two inebriates, who appeared for the first time, were fined 10s and 5s respectively. Faj-se Pretences. —G-eorgo Fullford was brought, up charged with having obtained money at Waimate by means of a valueless cheque. Accused had been arrested the previous night by Detective Benjamin, on a telegram received from Waimate. When arrested, he said he had an account at the Bank. On a previous occasion lie had overdrawn it, and his cheques had then been honored. He had not been in a position when he issued the cheque to know how his account stood at the Bank. Accused asked to be admitted to bail, and if his Worship would instruct a telegram to be sent to Tapanui, it would be found that he had an account at the Bank there. He did not think he ought to have been arrested on a criminal charge. His Worship told accused that, in the absence of any particulars as to the amount, lie could not admit him to bail. If he had been wrongly arrested he had his remedy. Remanded to Timaru, to be brought up there on 16th inst.
