WAIMAKARIRI FLOOD.

RAILWAY DAMAGED. The north-wester of yesterday and the previous day has caused a flood in the Waimakariri. During the forenoon to-day the river -was reported as rising, and before midday it had overflowed its banks at the usual place. The railway line between Chainey's and Kaiapoi for a distance of a mile and a half is much under water, and several bad breaches have been made. The temporary bridge at the Willows is gone. All traffic has of course been interrupted, and the coach road, we also learn, is impassable for passengers. The river is higher to-day than it has been for many years. Indeed some of the old residents say that they have never seen so great a flood before. The railway authorities are using every exertion to have the breaches repaired, in order that traffic may be resumed as speedily as possible.
