HUMANE EDUCATION.

Reference was lately made in these columns to the proceedings of the Victorian Humane Society, in promoting public knowledge as to the means of preserving and restoring life. The following further particulars of what is being done by the Society arc given by the Argvs The secretary of the Victorian Humane Society recently sought to secure the cooperation of those engaged in the training of youth in spreading a, knowledge of the objects of the association with which he is connected, and the simple remedies i recommended for the purpose of saving human life when medical assistance is not immediately available. Professor Andrew, of Wesley College, at once appreciated the value of the plan proposed, I and on Friday last gave a lecture to I the students by way of showing a practical sympathy with the object in view. The learned gentleman stated that the rules laid down by the society could not I well be included in the regular studies of his pupils, but that all might find time to acquire a knowledge of how to act in emergencies | when the preservation of life depends wholly s on prompt action, directed by a little skill. IHo drew the attention of his hearers to the desirability of acquiring the habit —for it is nothing more—of swimming as early in life !as possible, and recommended practice in diving for objects, and swimming with clothes on. The best methods of rescuing the drownJ ing, restoring the apparently drowned, | dealing with cases of sunstroke and j snake-bite, wore also dwelt upon, the various matters being rendered plain by ! the use of large illustrations drawn by Mr Godstcan, one of the masters. No one can doubt the value of such an uddiv-53, and wo would draw special notice to the statement with which our report' concludes : —•* The boys all appeared very “ much interested in the lecture.” We have no doubt that they were entertained, and the fact of their being amused will tend to iix the instruction received in their memories. W e feel equally sure that other boys are also prepared to give willing attention to the same subjects, and we trust their teachers will afford them an opportunity of doing so. We are always attempting to impress the youthful mind with the idea that “ knowledge is power,” and it would bo well it wo oftener gave some practical proof of (he reality of our conviction. Never is the correctness of the aphorism more apparent than in the presence of impending death. Many valuable lives might have been saved before now il those who went about helplessly their hands, or blunderingly doing something or other more calculated to hasten than delay dissolution, had possessed a little rudimentary knowledge of how to act under the circumstances. Professor Andrew lias set a very admirable example, which we hope to sec extensively followed.

The keeping of “ Saint Monday ” being very general among the so-called working men of Warrington, the local Bench of Magistrates have intimated that in future the penalty for getting drunk on Monday will be double what it will bo for getting drunk on any other day.
