SEVEN MILES WALKING RACE.
LONDON AMATEUR CHAMPION MEETING. H. Webster, Knotty Ash, 1; W. J, Morgan (A bdanta RC), 2 ; S. W. Mitealfc (LAC), 3 ; 11. Venn (LAC), 0 ; John Miles (Garston AC), 0. This was one of the best races ever seen at an amateur meeting. Directly the word was given Mitealfc dashed off in front, followed by Venn, Webster, and Males, Morgan, who had the inside berth, contenting himself with last position. This order continued up to the end of the second lap, when Morgan passed Miles, and the leading quartette began to draw away from the Garston man, and at the completion of the first mile Mitealfc led by about half a dozen yards, and a like distance separated the other three, Miles now being a long way behind. Coming down the straight in the fourth circuit Venn spurted in a very queer style, and took the lead by a few moments, but was soon repassed by Mitcalfe and Webster, the latter going to the front by the Pavilion. A little further on Morgan also passed Venn, who was going very “dickily,” and before the end of the round Mitcalfe again assumed the premiership. Entering the sixth circuit Miles gave up, and Mitcalfe placed a gap of a dozen yards between himself and Webster and Morgan, who were racing at each other in fine style, and both going with the utmost fairness. Mitcalfe, in the first lap of the third mile, put it on a bit, and “ getting up” at the far side of the ground increased his lead to about twenty yards ; but Just before the completion of the fourth mile (?.e. in the top stretch of the twelfth lap) Webster and Morgan spurted past the L.A.C. man, and on reaching the winning post Webster Just led Morgan, who was twenty yards in front of Mitcalfe, about 50 seconds behind whom came Venn, who was evidently out of it, and seemed to lose ground each lap. No further change occurred in the positions of the men until Just the finish, Webster every now and again spurting, but Morgan sticking to him with indomitable pluck, and opinions being pretty equally divided as to which would win. Close together they turned into the last straight, and here the long looked-for spurt of Morgan’s came, but was unavailing, as, although it brought him to the fore, the countryman had most left in him, and finally threw himself on the tape a winner by about half a yard, amidst tremendous excitement.
