CHRISTCHURCH POULTRY, PIGEON, AND CANARY SOCIETY.

The tenth annual exhibition of the above society was opened last evening at the Skating Rink. The managing committee had been hard at work from an early hour in the morning, and the various pens had been arranged so that not only were the exhibits shown to best advantage, but, favored by the suitableness of the building for the purpose, ample space was also given for promenading in without the unpleasantness of being crushed. As a whole the exhibition may be considered a success in every respect, and though many opinions were expressed that the birds would have been in full feather a month later, and thus shown to better advantage, still this deficiency was not so noticeable throughout as it was expected it would have been. Referring in very general terms —as want of space precludes us from particidarising in this issue—it may be said that in the poultry department, the Game and Spanish showed a marked improvement on previous shows. The Cochins were also better this year, and the young colored Dorkings were' capital birds, hardly through the moult, but next year would take a lot of beating anywhere. The usual contribution of light Dorkings from a well known and successful exhibitor was missed this time. The light Brahmas did not show as well as at last year's and the preceding exhibition. In Hamburghs, the golden pencilled and golden and silver spangled were a splendid lot altogether. The game bantams were not so good as last year. The first and second prize pens of Houdans were good birds. The exhibits of ducks and geese were few, and the Roucns in the former the best represented. A pen of Malays shown, though not fully grown, were admired, as being of true breed. Two of the features of the show are certainly the pigeons and canaries, and both altogether a magnificent lot of birds. In the former the black barbs, kites, blue dragoons, silver owls, blue chequered Antwerps, and blue Antwerps, have their particular admirers; while, in the latter, the golden spangled lizards, cinnamons, Norwich, Belgians, green jonques, and the fine collection of goldfinches, attract most attention in that department. As a whole the exhibition is an excellent one, and seemed to please the very large attendance of visitors last evening. To-day holders oi art union tickets will be admitted from noon, and one more attractive feature will be the pigeon race from Timaru. The birds are to be released at 10 a.m., and considerable speculation has been excited as to the time in

I which the distance will be done. His Excellency the Governor has accepted an invitation to visit the show during the afternoon. The following is the PRIZE LIST. Judges—Mr E.
