DXTNEDIN, June 4. Mr Blair, district engineer, has been instructed to make a reconnaisance surrey of a railway to the interior, and report upon the relative merits of the various routes. The Caledonian Society's classes were closed to new pupils on Thursday evening last. The attendance now amounts to 300. The preliminary examination of those desirous of entering as medical students at the Otago University was commenced on Saturday. The examination was a special one, and those [at whose request it was held did not put in an appearance. There was however one candidate. A stable containing five horses, and situated in Muclaggan street, the property of Mr Fitz Gerald, was destroyed by fire last night. It was insured in the New Zealand office for £IOO. The estimated loss is £3OO. The Governor's Visit. Wellington, June 4. The Governor, accompanied by the Hon. C. C. Eowen, leaves at 3 o'clock to-day per the Hinemoa, for Lyttelton. Bleniieim, June 4. The Marlborough Racing Club on Saturday evening declined to adopt the New Zealand rules.
