Mr G. M. Harrison, a surgeon at Manchester, died while under the influence of nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, administered to facilitate the extraction of teeth. About £SIOO has been contributed to the Mansion-house Fund for the relief of the widows and relatives sf the 110 fishermen who perished in the North Sea during the recent gales. At a meeting of the Home Rule Members of Parliament, a resolution was passed disapproving of the obstructive tactics lately adopted by a few of their number. Mr Joseph Arch has accepted an invitation to stand as a working man's candidate at the next Parliamentary election for Southwark. The Peking Gazette of February Ist contains a decree in which injunctions in favour of religious toleration, with special reference to Christian proselytism, are laid upon the Provincial Governments throughout the Empire. The decree is remarkable as being the first one of the kind ever issued spontaneously. The United States steamer Vandalia has sailed from Villefranche for Constantinople. The remainder of the American fleet goes to Smyrna and the Syrian coast immediately. The Russian war vessel Haydamack, at China, has been ordered, by telegraph, to join the Russian Pacific squadron at San Francisco.
Eleven of the steamers formerly owned by the Shanghai Steam Navigation Company were transferred to the Chinese flag on the Ist of March.
In the British House of Commons, recently, Bourke said Spain had promised to try General Burriel, of Virginia massacre notoriety, and that the trial had been delayed on account of the non-receipt of papers from Cuba, The boiler in the Hour mill at Alexandria, England, exploded. Sixteen persons were killed, and many injured. In front of the chancel screen of St. James's Church, Hatcham, were four paintings representing spiritual subjects, executed by the late vicar, the Eev. Arthur Tooth. On Saturday night or early on Sunday
morning some one gained access to the church and covered them with a thick coating of black paint. The perpetrator gained admittance to the church by the baptistry door, which had been left unfastened. A new Stock Exchange, which has been erected at a cost of £52,000, was opened on April 3rd at Glasgow. The Queen's Theatre at Edinburgh was destroyed by fire on April 4th. No lives were lost.
A man, named Thomas Stevenson, who was confined with others in a cell at the Edinburgh Police station, was killed by one of his fellow-prisoners in a fit of drunken passion. The murderer has been committed for trial on the capital charge. The platform of the Matlock Station on Good Friday evening was crowded with returning excursionists, when, upon the arrival of a train, a rush was made for seats and many persons were thrown down, several being run over and three very dangerously injured. St. Patrick's Day was celebrated in London by the annual dinner of the Benevolent Society of St. Patrick, at which Sir M. Hicks Beach presided, and by a gathering of members of Parliament and others favorable to the Home Rule movement, Mr Butt, M.P., being the chairman. The German Government has made a concession to the inhabitants of Alsace-Lorraine, by introducing a Bill transferring the right to legislate for those provinces from the German Parliament to the Provincial Diet, subject to appeal to the Imperial Parliament. Three of the wives of the late Sir Salar Jung were, by their own desire, burnt with his body according to the custom of Suttee in Nepaul. _______^_^______—
