COLOMBO ROAD WESLEYAN CHURCH.

A contract has now been entered into with Mr James Goss for the erection of this building, which will be proceeded witli at once, having to be completed about Christmas. The church as originally designed will not be carried out in its entirety at present, the spire, vestries, and orchestra being dispensed with. The internal dimensions are 66ft. by 40ft., from floor to ceiling 33ft., giving sittings for 400 adults. Provision is also made for future galleries, which when erected wi 11 contain about 200 sittings. The style is Early English, Transition to Decorated. The elevations will be carried up of square blue rubble, random coursed and pointed, with white stone facings, side walls to the height of 25ft. above floor level at west end, and 23ft. 6in. at east end (the floor having a rise of 18in. for acoustic purposes). The side walls will be flanked with boldly projecting buttresses, having two weather table 'offsets, and terminating in cusped gables, the side windows will be twin lancet. The apex of gables will be 49ft above ground level. The front will have two deeply recessed porches formed between the buttresses, which project boldly, and have two offsets with cusped gables; each porch will be paved and open, with seat on either side in the recess; above each porch there will be a three-light window inscribed in circle. The lobby (part of which will be utilised as a vestry pro tern) will be lighted by a fourlight window, with lancet heads cusped, above which is a large threc-mullion window, with geometrical head; all windows will be filled in with lead quarrels glazed with cathedral glass and ruby margin. Above largo window there will bo an equilateral ventilator, with cuspings and louvres, The front will be relieved by bands of white stone at intravils, also moulded labels and bosses richly carved over all windows and doors in front, and gablets on gable coping, surmounted by ornamental gilded finial. The roof will be carried by four well trussed principals (resting on carved stone corbels), chamfered and filled in with cut work of circles and cusps ; the coves of ceiling will be plastered, the principals and purlins being seen will be stained and varnished, there will be an ornamental patera in each bay. All the walls internally will be set out and lined in

imitation of ashlar, and tinted. All the windows will liaye hood-mouldings and bosses. There will also be a massive label mould round arch for orchestra (which will be built up at present.) The roof will be covered with slates, having several bands of cut slates of color to contrast with the plain ones. There will be a gablcfc for ventilation to each bay on either side. Ventilation is provided for by tubes from an air grating each window to grating on either side of passage, made to open and shut as required; also a ventilator in each window, also apertures above windows with gratings externally, and hinged flaps with cords internally, so as to open and shut. Front doors will have ornamental hinges, and will be made to slide, so as not to take up room in the lobbies ; all doors will be framed and stop-chamfered ; all internal woodwork will be of kauri. The benches will have open backs, fleur-de-lis termination on ends, and hat hooks on bearers. The rostrum will have stairs on either side, framed and stop-chamfered, with Gothic heads and sunk work and panels of Utrecht velvet; and richly moulded cornice and string. The Communion rail will have ornamental cast iron standards, picked out in colour and gilded. The building will be lighted with two large gas sunlights, with separate service, also in porches; the rostrum will have O.G. cabled brackets in universal joint. Mr T. S. Lambert is the architect; and when completed the church will not only supply a long required want in that growing neighborhood, but will also be an ornament to the district.
