MAGISTRATES' COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, May 28. [Before Dr. Donald, R.M.] Drunk and Disorderly. Margaret Bowen, charged with being drunk and using obscene language, was fined 15s and Is cab hire. Annie Wharton, an old offender, arrested foV drunkenness, was given one more chance, and fined 40s and cab hire. Wra, Stacey was fined 20s. Bobert Tindale, 10s. William Bolton, for being drunk and resisting the police, was fined £l. Thomas Henderson was fined in a similar amount. Patrick Butler was fined 20s and cautioned. Two inebriates, who appeared for the first time, were each fined ss, and another was discharged. James Dooley, for drunkenness and assaulting the police, was fined £1 10s. Thomas Fogel, who had been found drunk the previous night in Mr Eankin's yard, was sentenced to one week's imprisonment with hard labor. Michael Ryan was fined 10s. Illegally on Premises. —Henry Jones, J. 0. Holmes, Mary Holmes, and Theresa Dixon, were brought up, charged with being found illegally in an untenanted house in Lyttelton street. Dixon was drunk at the time. Jones was sentenced to forty-eight hours, and the others to one week.

Abditction. —The adjourned charge against O. Eobertson, of having abducted Ollivia Eobertson, was adjourned till Thursday, to allow of the attendance of the girl's father, at present at Akaroa. Larceny.—John Bird was charged, on remand, with having stolen a quantity of tools, belonging to C. Martin, W. Langford, R. M. Lean, and James Hensworth. Accused, who is a slangier, had been working with these persons at numerous jobs. The tools were identified, and were valued altogether at £1 7s 6d. Sentenced to three months' hard labour on each charge, or twelve months' in all.

Breach of Public-house Ordinance. — John Barrett was summoned for keeping open, and selling drink in, his licensed house, Barrett's Hotel, on the Oth of May. Mr Thomas, for defendant, admitted the offence. Fined £5. John Baylce, Criterion Hotel, summoned for a "similar offence on the Bth of May, also admitted it through Mr Thomas, and was fined £5.

Assault. —Benjamin Moss was charged on siunmons with assaulting his wife, E. Moss. Dr Foster appeared for complainant, and said that Mrs Moss had had property of her own and defendant had been in the habit of living on her earnings. This was not so much objected to but defendant had also made a habit of coming home drunk, abusing and assaulting his wife. He now expressed very great penitence, and promised amendment for the future. His Worship bound him over in his own recognizances to keep the peace for six months.

Horses and Cattle at large —Far permitting horses and cattle to wander at large the following persons were each fined 5s —W. J. Stevens., 1). McG-uinness, Win. Calvert, Alex. Cowan, Wm. Ormandy, E. Campbell, J. Marsden, Thos. Aldridge, B. Hale, J. Pepperell, S. Day, Wm. Eeece, W. Hartnall, J. Beid, E. Offord. John Brown, James Bowman, and E. Beattie on twp informations were each fined 10s. Keeping a Savage Dog—David Q-irdley was summoned for allowing a savage dog to be at large. Defendant denied being the owner of the dog. Case dismissed.

Careless Driving. The adjourned charge against John Falloon, 'bus driver, for reckless driving, at the junction of Madras and St Asaph streets, was called on, and, after hearing some evidence, dismissed. Miscellaneous. —Thomas Gee, for having no light on a hoarding, was fined 10s. A case against Wm. Moore, for allowing his horse and cart to bolt, was dismissed. A case against John Gay, for careless driving, was dismissed" Harry Keatly and C. Rouse, summoned for leading a horse along the footpath, were each fined 10s. Benjamin Button, for obstructing Oxford ' terrace, was fined lUs. Eliza, lies and James Colston, for allowing a chimney on their premises to catch on fire were each fined. Albert Brown and John Leekie, for not being in attendance on their horse and cabs, were each fined 10s. A case against Geo. Brown for a similar offence, was dismissed. William Parker, summoned for neglecting to keep a light burning on scaffolding in Madras ttreet, and also with erecting the eajae with-

out having received the necessary permission from the City Council, was fined 15s.

Unregistered Dogs.—For being the owners of unregistered dogs for the current year, the following persons were each lined 20s:—E. Bolthwick, E. Cottrell, John Watson, Thomas Henderson, William Hobbs, S. Ashton, F. Alexander, J. Corkin, W. Calvert, John Farland, C. E. Lipsham, and David G-irdley! For having two unregistered dogs in their following, Gr. A. Buck and Robert Beattie were each fined 40s.

Illegal Rescue. Charles Whittaker, charged with illegally rescuing a cow from William Pvke, was lined 10s.

Protection of Earnings.—A case against Robert Shannon, whose wife appeared for the protection of her earnings, was adjourned in the absence of defendant.

LYTTELTON. Monday, May 28. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) Drunkenness.—John Durham, arrested by Constable Mcintosh, was fined 40s, or, in default, ninety-six hours's imprisonment. John Cameron, arrested by Constable Mcintosh, was fined. 10s, or, in default, forty-eight hours'.

Assaulting the Police.—James Moffat, a seaman belonging to the Star of the Mersey, was charged with assaulting Constable Mcintosh, in front of the Canterbury Hotel. Accused was further charged with assaulting a seaman aboard the vessel. The Bench fined accused 40s for the first offence and 20s for the second offence, or, in default, a week's imprisonment for each charge.
