MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHEISTCHURCH. Wednesday, May 23
(Before G-. L. R.M., and J. T.
Brown, Esq.," J.P.) Drunk and Disorderly. Elizabeth Bennett, who promised if leniently dealt with to join the G-ood Templars, was fined 5s ; Charles Pauvel was fined ss, and Charles Evans, an old offender who had also resisted the arresting constable, was sentenced to one months* imprisonment witli hard labor. Four first offenders were each fined 5s for drunkenness.
Fighting.—G-eorge Stevens Palmer and Henry Jones were arrested for fighting in Cashel street. Palmer, who was also proved to have been drunk at the time was fined 40s, Jones 10s.
Stealing from: a Dwelling.—William Harrison was charged with stealing a watch, hair guard, sleeve links, pocket handkerchief, and 20s in silver from Wm. Allen's house, London street, Lyttelton. Accused had given himself up to Sergeant Hughes about halfpast one that morning. He said he had only taken sixteen shillings, and had obtained £1 on the watch and trinkets from McDonald, tailor, at Lyttelton. On the application of Inspector Buckley he was remanded to Lyttelton to the brought up there on the 25th instant.
Embezzlement. —G-eorge E. Wells, late station master at the Coalgate station, was brought up charged with having embezzled 6s 5d belonging to the General Grovernment, and remanded for eight days for the producof evidence.
Protection Order. —At the request of Mr Loughnan for complainant, an application against Eichard Shannon for a protection order was adjourned for a week as defendant had promised to allow his wife 30s per week, and execute a deed of separation.
LYTTELTON. Wednesday, May 23. [Before W. Donald, Esq., K.M.] Drunk and Disorderly.—Primrose Bell, arrested by Constable Bullen, was fined 10s, or in default 48 hours.
IXDECENCY. —William Taylor, alias Wright, was sentenced to eight months' imprisonment with hard labour for an offence of this nature.
Breach of Sheep Ordinance. —William G-oodwin was charged with a breach of this act by David Gebbie, owner of run of Wo 431. Mr 11. A T . jValdcr appeared for Mr Gebbie. It appeared that Mr Goodwin had had a number of sheep driven through Mr Gebbie's run without any notice being given, on May 14th last. The number of sheep driven was stated to be 600. The Bench inflicted the lowest possible penalty, 6d per head, which with Court costs and solicitor's fee made the whole amount, for which judgment was given £l7 7s.
