The report that a ship was seen on (ire off Cape Saunders proved a myth. The tug Kopntai having proceeded to the southward of the cape, and then stood out for twenty miles to the eastward without seeing a trace of any vessel save the steamer Ino from Port Molyneux, which had made a straight course from the Molyneux to Port Chalmers, and had seen nothing. It is evident that the person who gave information to the harbourmaster must have intended to hoax him. Great indignation is expressed at the whole affair.

Divorce Court. Wellington, May 23

In the Divorce Court this morning, in the ease of Dyson v. Dyson and Forward, it appeared that the necessary affidavit had not been procured from Christchurch, though it had been telegraphed for several limes by the solicitor here. The Bench said the alUdavit was necessary to the parties in order to obtain a decree, and intimated that the parties would apparently have a right of action against the solicitor for negligence. The case was ultimately adjourned until Monday, to enable an affidavit to be obtained in the meantime. Arrived—Carnatic and Julius Vogel, from Lyttelton. The Hon. F. Whitaker left for Auckland in the Hiuemoa this morning.

Execution of Te Patui. Auckland, May 23

There is no Australian news of importance. Nothing is talked of but the elections. The result so far is fifty-one Opposition, and only fifteen Ministerialists. This is a crushing defeat to the Government. The polling is very close. Two Ministers have lost their scats, and many old members arc rejected.
