Engagement near Batonm.— Russian Account.
Prussians Crossed the Danube. Engagement now Proceeding. London, May IG. Russian despatches say that their losses in the engagement near Eatoum were trilling, whilst those of the Turks were enormous. A division of the Russian army has crossed the Danube, and entered Dobrudscha. An engagement is now proceeding. INTER PROVINCIAL. [Pee Peess Agency.] Wreck of the Ocean Mail at the Chathams. Auckland, May 17. The barque Alasca, at. Russell, reports the loss of the Ocean Mail on the Chatham Islands, hound from Wellington to London with wool. The vessel is a t otal wreck. She was sold for T9OO to Ritchie and Co. All hands were saved. The wreck occurred on March 19th. Bluff, May 17. The Tararua left Sandvidge railway pier on the 9t.li, at 4 p.m ; passed the Heads at 7 p.m., and Cape Filler at 2.30 p.m. on the 11th; arrived at Hobart Town at 7 p.m., left on the 12th at 3 p.m. Experienced light head winds throughout the passage. Made the Solanders at 5 p.m. on he Kith, arriving at the Bluff at daylight this morning. She sails for Dunedin at 1 p.m. Saloon passengers for Lyttelton—Mr Donally and child : and forty-six tons of cargo. Westport, May 17. A very brilliant meteor was seen here shortly after 1! p.m. yesterday. Wellington, May 17. The sittings of the Court, of Appeal have been suspended for the present without having decided any case, in order to take a number of cases set down for hearing in the Divorce Court. Dunedin, May 17. At the Police Court this morning two clerks of Road Boards wore lined in a nominal penalty for not forwarding to the Taicri Registration Officer a list of ratepayers for the year ending 30th March, 1877 AUSTRALTAN NEWS. (Per Tararua, via Bluff.) The Tararua brings no later news of interest than that received per Wakatipu. Judge Stephen has received twelve months’ leave to visit Europe, and Sir Redmond Barry was telegraphed to return. A considerable quantity of rain has fallen all over the country. Business has improved.
