BOARD OF EDUCATION.

Wednesday, Mat 16. A meeting of the Board was held at 3 p.m. Present —Messrs John Inglis (chairman), H. J. Tancred, A. Duncan, H. R. M ebb, J. N. Tosswill. REPORTS. The annual report of the VV ellington kducational District was laid on the table, as also the reports of Mr Restell on the Stoke, Eyreton, Kaiapoi Island, Mandcville Plains, and Ivaiapoi Island North. INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL, BURNHAM. A report by Mr Restell on the Industrial School at Burnham was laid on the table, and ordered to be forwarded to Mr Rolleston for his information. BKOOKSIDE. A complaint was received from Mr J. Q. Walker, to the effect that the boys and girls were not making satisfactory progress in drill, owing to the master not giving drill instruction as requested by the instructor. It was decided to forward a copy of the report to the committee of the school. UNSTAMPED CHEQUES. A communication was received from the auditor enclosing telegram from the Hon. C. C. Bowen with regard to the issue of unstamped cheques, and giving unstamped receipts. The telegram stated that the Government did not think it worth while to take action in the matter, but that the Board in future must issue stamped cheques and stamped receipts. NORMAL SCHOOL. A letter was read from Mr Howard suggesting certain alterations necessary to be made in the Normal School. He also reported that the attendance at the students classes was steadily on the increase. It was agreed to sanction the private room for Miss Perry, and also the cloak room, as requested. The Board declined to sanction the building of a lecture theatre, as required by Mr Howard. A letter was received from Mr Patcrsen, the third master of the practising department of the Normal School, pointing out that his salary was £IOO a year less than the salary of the same grade of master in the Dunedin School, and also of Mr Thornton, a master of the same grade in the Christchurch Normal School as himself. A letter was also read from Mr Howard, the principal of the school, recommending an increase of Mr Paterson’s salary as requested. The consideration of the matter was deferred. BALCAIRN. A deputation from Balcaim waited on the Board on (lie part of certain residents in that district, to request the erection of a school in the district. There was at present sixtyeight children in the district who had to go more than three miles to any school, which in winter time prevented their attendance. It was resolved that the petitioners be requested to confer with the chairmen of the school committees affected by the creation of the new district; the matter being left in the hands of the chairman to lake such further steps as he may deem necessary to carry out the wishes of the petitioners. RANGITATA ISLAND. The request for the formation of a new district was considered and granted. The Board decided to proclaim the district at once. It was resolved to appoint Mr Buxton as chairman of the meeting to be held on Monday fortnight, to elect a school committee. EYRETON. The Chairman reported that he had appointed Capt. Row as commissioner for Eyreton. The Board approved the appointment. NEW BRIGHTON. Mr Corsan was appointed as chairman of the meeting of householders to elect a member of committee in room of Mr Laine. GOVERNMENT SCHOLARSHIPS. Four applications for entrance on the roll of scholarships were received, being dated some days after the date for receiving the ap plications. The Board resolved that as due notice had been given the applications could not be received. LYTTELTON. A. letter was read from the committee of the Borough School pointing out the necessity for, a residence being provided for the head master, the cost not to exceed £IOOO, for site, \o. The matter was postponed lor the present. WEST OXFORD. Tenders for the additions to the West Oxford school were opened and considered. The highest was £IOO, and the lowest £IBO. The tender of Mr W. Harvey for £IBO was accepted by the Board. NORTH ROAD. Tenders were opened for additions to this school, and the tender of Crofts and Tucker for £216 was accepted. EAST CHRISTCHURCH INFANT SCHOOL. Tenders were opened for the erection of this school, and that of Mr Tilman for £2199 17s accepted. After the transaction of some routine business the Board adjourned.
