Turkish official accounts slate (hat a Russian army corps unsuccessfully attacked the iulrcnchments near Batoum, and were defeated with the loss of 40,000. British Squadron ordered to Egypt. An inquest was held at the Lunatic Asylum yesterday, concerning the death of John Bowers who died in that institution on Saturday. Deceased was received into the Duncdin hospital a few days previous, and after having undergone treatment there for four days was, on the certificate of Drs Bums and Coughtrcy sent to the Asylum as being insane. The day on which he was removed was a cold ' one, and the conveyance used was an open express. According to the evidence of Professor Maegregor, when deceased ■Arrived at the Asylum He was in a dying slate
from typhoid fever. He lingered on for a eouple of days, and died on the date above mentioned. Considerable interest was (alien in tbe ease by the medical men of the city, and, exclusive of the coroner, there were seven present at tbe inquest, and six gave evidence. Tbe jury returned a verdict that the deceased died from typhoid ft ver,and at first intimated their intention of adding a rider condemnatory of ("lie carelessness shown in removing the tbe decased in an open express on a cold day. An inquest was held on the body of Mr Clarke yesterday, and a verdict of "Accidental Death" returned, but the jury added a rider IVLming the Government for supplying unsafe and unsuitable engine and trucks to the eont raclors. The half-yearly meeting of the National Insurance Company was held yesterday afternoon. There was a large attendance of shareholders. The report and balance sheet were unanimously adopted, and three retiring directors re-elected, but not without rather an animated discussion. Hurricane at the Friendly Islands. Supposed Loss of the May Queen. Auckland, May 15. The briganfine Helena has arrived from Tonga and Samoa. About March 20th the May Queen was at Jvua, having taken on board a cargo of sheep. A hurricane came on suddenly, and the vessel was lost sight of. Nothing has been seen or heard of her (since, although the man-of-war Sappho, and the King of Tonga, have used every effort to trace her. The hurricane lasted twentyfour hours, and destroyed on Tongataboo and Kcppel Islands over a thousand houses, and sixteen churches were blown down. It is generally believed that the May Queen is lost with all'hands. Captain Mcnzies, late chief officer of -the Count ess of Kintore, was in command. The following were known to be on board: —Mr G. Bullock, salesman for Owen and Graham, of Auckland, Mr George Owen, Jun., with the mate and a crew of four Kanakas. Mrs Menzies had landed at Samoa. The ketch Pearl during a hurricane was thrown high and dry on a reef at Tonga, but was got oft' with only slight injury. A deputation of Samoan chiefs has gone to Fiji to claim British protection for Samoa, where all troubles are now at an end. Wellington, May 15.
Tbe ship Benledi, from London, ran in without a pilot during a heavy gale last night. She encountered very heavy weather running down the English Channel, and lost; four men off the jib-boom, and had to put back for repairs. She brings a number of cabin passengers.
