MAGISTRATES’ COURTS.

CHRISTCHURCH. Monday, May 11. (Before G. L. Mellish, Esq., R.M., and F. Hobbs, Esq., J.P.) ( Drunk and Disorderly. —Several inebriates were lined in various amounts. An Alleged Nuisance.— Thomas Hancock was summoned by William Pearce, Inspector of Nuisances, for being the owner of a soap manufactory which was alleged to be a nuisance. Mr Wynn Williams, who appeared for defendant, said the summons had only been served on Thursday night. There was not sufficient time between the service of the summons and this morning to enable him (Mr Williams) to prepare a defence in so important a case. He had therefore to apply or an adjournment. Mr Cowlishaw reminded the Court that JMr Hancock had received notice in the matter before the information was laid. Mr Williams said the time was too short to enable him to prepare a defence. Besides, two important witnesses could not be got to-day. His Worship adjourned the case until Monday next. Railway Bye-laws. —William Briggs was charged with getting into a railway carriage at the Christchurch station while the train was in motion. The charge was proved, and defendant fined 20s. Unnecessary Oustruction. —Charles Edward Lipsham, charged with allowing his horse and cart to stand on the roadway, was fined 10s.

No Light Burning. —John Foster, jun., was charged with having no light burning on a heap of shingle in Park Terrace, and fined 20s.

Cattle at Large.—The following persons were fined :—William Merritt, 5s ; Luke Adams, ss; Bernard Evers, ss; A. J. llulme, ss; John Tetley, ss; Hugh Taylor, ss; Matthew Allen, ss; Thomas Aldridge, 5s ; John Falloon, 5s ; John Harker, 5s ; Eeuben Butcher, 5s ; G. Eastwick, 5s ; Benjamin Stafford, ss. Butting on the Footpath.—E. W. Millett was charged with driving on the footpath. Fined 10s.

Absent from Horse and Vehicle. — Thomas Falloon was fined 10s for this offence.

Disobeying an Order oe Court. — Arthur Thompson was charged with disobeying an order of the Court for the payment of 7s 6(1 a-week towards his wife’s support. His Worship made an order for the payment of the arrears forthwith. Smoking in a Railway Carriage.— Edward Prior, charged with smoking in a railway carriage, was fined ss. Slaughter Licenses. The following licenses were granted: —Furze and Dowling, Selwyn : Thomas Gfabbatas, Prebbleton; Henderson and Meßcath, Spreydon; John Mann, St. Albans; E. Mitchell and Co.; A von ; E. Sarrell, Fendalltown road ; Samuel Ward, Prebbleton; R. J. Longhnan, Heathcote. Dog Nuisance Ordinance. Fines of 20s each were imposed in the following cases: —Frederick Arnold, John Brunt, Geo. Green, Henry Pagett, Daniel Lynch, John Marshall, David Thow, Win. Jackson. Driving Without Reins.—John Gear was charged with driving without reins, and fined 10s. Assaults. —James O’Brien was summoned for having committed an assault on his wife Hannah O’Brien. Defendant did not appear, and his Worship directed a warrant to be issued for bis arrest. —Mary Martin was charged with assault ing Joseph Kennedy. Mr Thomas appeared for defendant. After hearing the evidence, his Worship dismissed the case ; plaintiff to pay costs, 31s. Abusive Language. James Donaldson was summoned for using abusive language towards his wife Margaret Donaldson, Neither of the parties appeared.

LYTTELTON. Monday, May 11. [Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.j Drunkenness. —Frederick Johnston, 'arrested by Constable B alien, and John Brown, arrested by Constable Devine, charged with above, were fined 10s each or in default fortyeight hours.
