BOARD OF EDUCATION.
Wednesday, May 9. The Board met at 3 p.m. Present—Messrs John Inglis (chairman), Webb, Duncan, Tancred, Tosswill, and Montgomery. REPORTS. The Chairman laid on the table a number of reports by Mr Hammond on the schools of the Peninsula. WAINUI. The Inspector reported that the attendance at the school was only eight. After discussion it was resolved to inform the committee that the allowance after the end of Juno would only be £6 10s per head unless the attendance increase. TI.UARU. The Rev. Mr Gillies waited on the Board from the school committee to explain matters as regarded the salary of the second mistress and the re-arrangement of the salaries of some of the other mistresses. The Board decided to grant the requests made in each case. auditor’s report. A report was read from Mr John Ollivier, Provincial Auditor, stating that he had audited the accounts of the Board to 31st March last. He noticed that the Board had been giving cheques on the Bank of New Zealand without stamping them, and also taking receipts without stamps being affixed. This was an infringement of the Stamp Act, and he had reported the same to Wellington. Mr Tosswill said that Road Boards were in many instances using unstamped cheques. pilot station. A letter was read from the Harbor Board asking for a lease of the site of the pilot station, which was on an educational reserve. It was decided to grant a lease for twentyone years to tiie Harbor Board, at a nominal rental ,of the pilot station, as asked for by the Board. westerfield. An application was received from this district asking for the appointment of a master. The Board decided to grant the usual subsidv of £G 10s per head on the average attendance. NEW BRIGHTON. The Board decided to appoint Mr Lainc as Ret urning Officer for the election of a member of committee in place of the late Mr Kerr. EVRETON. 1 u (his district the householders had failed to appoint a committee, and it devolved on (lie Hoard to appoint a commissioner under the Hoard. It was decided to leave tlic appointment oi I lie commissioner in the hands of the chairman. K 01UUSTC1IUROII. The Board sanctioned the appointment of W. F. Wake as pupil teacher at the Gloucester street School, The Board then went into committee, and afterwards adjourned.
