Prisoner was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment, with hard labour.— Mary Graham, who was suffering very much from the effects of drink, was remanded for eight days for medical treatment. Larceny.— James Kelly was charged with having stolen a scarf at the Ashburton. Prisoner was arrested on the previous day at Christchurch. Constable Cunningham, stationed at the Ashburton, deposed that he knew the accused. About two months ago he was in his custody at Ashburton. He searched prisoner’s swag and found the scarf produced. He had made inquiries all over the Ashburton, and Messrs Mitchell and Turner had identified the scarf as their property. By prisoner—l had my own authority to search the swag. I searched it in the police office. Sergeant Felton was present at the time. I did not then charge you with stealing, because I did not know that I could get it identified. I had my suspicions, and retained the sc rf. Inspector Buckley applied for a remand for eight days for the production of further evidence. Application granted.
