FATAL ACCIDENT ON THE SOUTHERN RAILWAY.
An accident occurred last night on the Great Southern lino resulting in the instant death of an engine driver named Richard Drury, who was in charge of a heavy goods train drawing forty loaded trucks. About. 10.40 p.m. the train, going at a moderate speed, approached the Racecourse gates, there being deceased, the stoker (Sterling), and Mr Owen, assistant traffice manager, on the engine. A goods train had come up to town a short time previously, and so far as could be seen it was believed that the gates were open. This did not prove to bo the case, and coming through with a crash the driver was struck on the head with a splinter, killing him in•stautly.The train was brought to a standstill by the stoker and Mr Owen as soon as possible, and after a short delay the engine was uncoupled and brought on as far as the Addington gates. A cab was observed to be passing at the time, and deceased was placed in it. and convoyed to (lie Hospital, where he was seen by Mi I’ridgeon, in the absence of the surgeon, and pronounced to be dead. It has not transpired whether the whistle was blown or not when approaching the scene of the. accident, Deceased was married, bub had no family.
