MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Wednesday, April 25. [Before G. L. Hellish, Esq, E.M.] Wife Desertion. David Millar Avas arrested for deserting his wife. The prosecutrix stated that her husband left her in New Zealand, and went to Victoria. She followed him there, and lived with him a fortnight, when he deserted her again, leaving her without, means. From the statement, of accused it was shown that lie had been residing with his wife's parents while in Melbourne, and he found it impossible to live with her, as she possessed a very bad temper. His wife had ample means when he went, to Victoria with her father. It was patent from the feelings exhibited in Court by both parties that they could not live happily together. Eventually his Worship decided to allow the case to stand over until Saturday, to see if the parties could come to some amicable arrangement.
Dhukk and Disorderly.—J. -T. Dowey, for being drunk and assaulting the constable, was fined 40s, and Is cab fare. Two inebriates, who appeared for the first time, were each fined ss; and a third, who had been admitted to bail, 10s. Daniel Pasche was fined 40s.

Wednesday, April 25. (Before W. Donald, Esq., R.M.) 15j] hezzlkment of Ship's O.Mjao.—William Rogers and William Woollier, on remand, were charged with the above offence. The charge against Woollier was withdrawn by the police, and the following evidence against Rogers taken:—William Woolner, sworn, said I am an able seaman on board the Cumntic. I know accused. I lived with him in the forecastle. Between eight and nine o'clock one night, in the Channel, 1 was called by a man, who asked me to give him a lift with the fore hatch. Ido not know who the man was, but about 20 minutes afterwards when I went into the forceaste Rogers, who was silting on his chest, called me and asked me if 1 would have the shirt in his hands at the time. I said, " yes," and put if in niv chest. 1 had no subsequent conversation with him. Those produced are the shirts. I authorised no one to take them. I found the box had been much injured, the tin being cut through and all the more saleable articles abstracted. Captain Rhind gave further evidence, after hearing which the Bench dismissed the case.
