Tones’s Thousand Pounds Sweep.— The following are the chief prize-takers in he sweep instituted by Mr Tonks, of Greymouth, on the Christchurch Autumn Handicap : —lst, Messrs Simson and Adam, Greymouth, £SOO ; 2nd, Miss Roberts, Shamrock Hotel, Dunedin, £2OO ; 3rd, Mr Winstanley, Blenheim, £IOO. The remaining £2OO is to be divided between the holders of starting and non-starting horses. Football. —On Saturday the match between the Club and the College will take place on the ground of the latter at 2.45 p.ru. The committee met last night, and chose the following team to do battle for the red and black colors, viz., Messrs A. H. Anderson, W. H. Atack, C. Bolton, T. Chapman, E. R. Deacon, J. R. Evans (captain), W. Hartland, G. S. Mathias, H. W. Moore, H. McCardell, L. M. Ollivier, 11. S. Paul, M. Smith, W. Stringer, aud J. Wilkin. Emergency—ll. Cottcrill, E. G. Hawkes, J. Wachsman. The following were elected members of the club: —Messrs A. Appleby, E. M. Boulton, E. F. Moore, A. C. Nottingham, H. H. Secretan, A. Templer, and F. Whitcombe. There will be a Picked Sides game on Cranmer square at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Ratepayers’ Association. —At the meetng on Thursday evening the following two resolutions were passed, as the form in which the drainage, canal, and dock scheme shall be submitted to the ratepayers: —“ 1. That this meeting thinks that any underground system of drainage is unnecessary, expensive, and dangerous to public health, and that a system of surface concrete channel drainage is all that is required to drain the whole district; and that the Board shall have plans, designs, and estimates of the same prepared for the ratepayers. 2. That as it is necessary to remove the sewage to the sea, and that, to effect this, the 2000 acres of estuary should be reclaimed ; also, as the excavated material from the canal and dock is required to effect this reclamation, this meeting requests the Drainage Board to have prepared for the ratepayers designs, plans, and estimates of the dock, canal, and drainage scheme.” All the corporate bodies have been invited to attend the meeting.
