ARRIVAL OF THE CARNATIC,
This vessel, a wooden barque of 871 tons, arrived yesterday afternoon, and anchored oil Rhodes’Bay at 4 p.m. She belongs to Mr John Rhine!, and has a large and valuable cargo, consigned to the New Zealand Shipping Company. The Carnatic brought two saloon passengers, and thirty-one immigrants, ex Hurunui; these were under the charge of Dr Watson M atsou, and have arrived in good health. One child, namcp David Hurunui Bates, aged ten weeks, died on Christmas Day, of bronchitis; but with this exception the health of the immigrants has been, very good. They consist of four families, five single girls, and eight single men. They had capital lodgings in a portion of the saloon, and seemed well pleased with their passage. The ship has been 114 days from Gravesend, having been no less than fifty-one days to the Line, owing to adverse gales. She landed her pilot at Madeira. We append the captain’s report: —The Carnatic left Gravesend on the 20th December, and took departure from the land off the Lizard on the 26th; had strong westerly gales to Madeira, where the pilot was landed ; had no IsVE. trades, and crossed the equator fifty-one days out, on the 9th of February, and on same day caught S.E. trades, which carried her to 31deg S. and left her on 20th February; had fine weather and fair winds to meridian of Cape, which was passed on March 7th: ran down her casting between the 50th and 51st parallels, and made the Snares on April 4th; had strong northerly winds up the Coast, and experienced the southerly gale on Saturday last when she was within thirty miles of port. This gale blew the ship to sea and several sails were lost. Sighted the Heads yesterday, and arrived as above.
SAILING OF THE N.Z.S. COMPANY’S SHIP WAIPA. The Waipa, one of this Company’s splendid line of passenger ships, cleared and sailed yesterday, with a large and valuable cargo and full comnlement of saloon passengers. The following is a list of the cargo and approximate value of exports : £ s. d. 2213 bales wool and skins ... ... 44,200 0 0 5351 sacks wheat 5,351 0 0 237 casks tallow ... ... ... 9,480 0 0 48 cases tallow 072 0 0 GO bags bones 21 0 0 3 cases sundries ... ... ... 22 0 0 10 boxes gold (14,234.02 lldwt 12grs) 58,910 8 7 Total value ... ... ... £118,710 8 7 At 4 p.m. the tug Titan took her in tow, and there being a good tide, and the vessel only drawing 10ft 10m forward and 16ft Sin aft, there was no trouble in getting her out. She was taken right down the harbor, and sailed last night. In splendid trim, this grand vessel should make a good passage, and we hope Captain Brown will inaugurate his command by a pleasant as well as a speedy voyage. The friends of the passengers assembled in numbers to see them oil', and the principal officers of the Company were, ns usual, in attendance to see that all was well. The ship was clear of the heads by dusk. SHIPPING TELEGExkMS. Wellington, April 13. Arrived—ll.ls a.m, Taranaki, from Lyttelton; Hannah Bavratt, from Lyttelton.
