Hon Major Atkinson, Premier, writes to the Nem Zealand Times a letter (apparently a copy of one written to the Agent-General) in reference to certain New Zealand statistics published in Westgarth’s circular of January, 1877. Ho first points out that the circular publishes the amount of New Zealand revenue for 1873-4, instead of that for 187 G. The table in Westgarth’s circular made out that the revenue of New Zealand for 1870 was £1,677,626, while of Victoria was £4,236,123. The Premier, quoting from the New Zealand statistics, shows that the receipts in New Zealand for 1875 amounted to £2,841,953 (instead of only £1,077,626), as compared with the £4,236,423 received in Victoria. He also points out that, although there was a note in the circular stating that t he amount given as New Zealand revenue was ex-Provineial revenues, still that left an orroi of £30,000. He requests the Agent-General to make personal explanation to Mr Westgarth, and get him to rectify the error pointed out, and also to inform him that lie can obtain all statistics of the colony, and information relating to its progress, til the AgentGeneral’s Office. The Premier appends to the letter a tabulated statement of all sources

of revenue of Victoria and New Zealand for 1875. The totals are—Victoria, £4,236,423 ; New Zealand, £2,811,955. The Government steamer Luna lias been just sold, though not yet taken over, to the Brunner Coal Mining Company for £IOOO.

An inquest was held to-day into the origin of the lire in the offices, store, and timber belonging to Reginald McDonald, storekeeper and timber merchant, on the morning of the 4th. The jury returned a verdict that it was maliciously set on fire, but that there was no evidence to shew by whom. Besides the premises destroyed, a timber store and a produce store had been set on fire by means of Hobart Town splits and a log saturated with turpentine, but they wendiscovered and extinguished before any damage was done. Two detectives have been engaged investigating the matter for several days. The premises and stock burnt were fully insured. Dunedin, April 6. The dramatic season at the Princess Theatre closes to-morrow night. Th'i Bused n Fire* {From a correspondent of the Press.) Dunedin, April 6. The City Council have resolved to retain the fever hospital on the present site. It is officially reported that there" are over 150 fever cases in Dunedin now. Four hundred pounds have been collected for Captain John McLean. A sale of land at Fcrnhill averaged £SOOO per acre. It is reported that the fire at Balclutha on Wednesday was the result of incendiarism. Attempts to burn MacDonald’s produce store adjoining, this morning, were discovered in time to save the buddings. But for the strong brick walls of Bison’s dwelling in Walker street, the fire this morning must have proved very serious, as a high wind was blowing, and there was unaccountably long delay in the appearance of the brigade. The flames spread with such rapidity that the inmates of the houses burnt were little more than able to save themselves. The insurances are:—Palmer, £2OO on stock and furniture in the Standard; estimated loss £3OO. T. Carter, stock and furniture, £3OO in the New Zealand ; estimated loss £4OO. Mrs Melican, stock, &e., £2OO in the Norwich office ; estimated loss £6OO. G. Elson, insured in the Norwich Union office for £IOOO. Rising Sun Hotel —buildings, £200; stone buildings, £100; brick buildings, £2OO ; on furniture £300; on buildings—wooden buildings at rear of brick building, £2OO ; estimated loss, £6OO. The National had no insurances on the buildings, having lately refused a risk on the Rising Sun. A policy on Palmer’s shop expired in December last. Mrs Melican lost over £IOO in cash. This i s the first fire of any importance that has taken place in Walker street. The principal case is Russell v. Smythies, in which heavy damages are claimed for malicious prosecution arising out of recent proceedings in the Resident Magistrate’s Court for perjury.
