MAGISTRATES' COURTS.
CHRISTCHURCH. Tuesday, March 27. (Before G. L. Lee, Esq, and Dr Deamer, J.P's.) Obtaining Goods by False Pretences. —Elizabeth Bryant, arrested for obtaining goods by false pretences from Clark and Son, Akaroa, was remanded to that place, to be brought up in ten days or sooner if necessary. Drunk and Disorderly. Maurice Power, arrested for drunkenness, was fined 10s, and Is cab-hire. Annie Osborne, an old offender, arrested for being drunk, creating a disturbance in Gloucester street, and using obscene language, was fined 20s. Two inebriates, who appeared for the first time, were each fined 53. Another first offender, who had been admitted to bail, was fined 10s.
Vagrancy.—Mary Taylor was charged under the Vagrant Act with obtaining subscriptions from Roger Tucker, carpenter, Caledonian road, under false pretences. When arrested by Sergeant Wilson accused denied all knowledge of the offence. The prosecutor called, stated that on last Tuesday accused came to his place and asked for a subscription for a widow named Robinson, living at St Albans, who was in deep distress ; had five children in the house, and one of whom was dying. Witness gave the woman ss, and his father gave her a similar amount. From a card accused showed witness from the Rev Mr Crump, he (witness) went to that gentleman, and was told by him that he knew nothing about a widow named Robinson. A woman had called upon him bearing the description of accused, and asked him for a subscription for a widow named Brown. Inspeator Buckley told the Bench that as the accused had only been arrested late the previous night there had not been time to call upon the other witnesses. He would ask for a remand until the following day. Remand granted aa asked. LYTTELTOSL Tuesday, March 27. (Before H. B. Webb and H. Allwright, Esqs., J.P.s) Abusive Language—Patrick Sullivan, a boy belonging to the American schooner William Cobb, was charged by the master of that vessel with having med abusive language to him on § Monday, the 26th. It apnenred, from the evidence, that the boy was rlrunk at the time. The Bench sentenced accused to seven days' imprisonment with hard labour. Breach op Borough Bye laws.—John Fentoo, for having a chimticy on fire, was fined 10s, and cos's 4s.
