DUNEDIN JOCKEY CLUB RACES.

The races commenced to-day. The weather was unfavorable during the forenoon, but it cleared up at one o'clock, when there were about 4000 people on the ground. The first event was the Maiden Plate, of 80 sovs, a mile and a half. Titania and Bribery were scratched. The race was a very unsatisfactory affair, as it was supposed to be controlled by the bookmakers.
Maiden Plate, of 80 sovs. The second horse to receive 10 sovs from the stakes; entrance, 3 sovs; one mile and a half. For horses that nave never won an advertised prize exceeding £25. Weight for age. Mr A. Smith's ch g Little Dan, 3 yrs, 7st 81bs 1 Mr S. Carleton's br h Tregale, 4 yrs 9st 2 Time—3min 28secs. The Dunedin Cup, a handicap of 500 sovs, with a sweepstakes of 10 sovs each. The second horse to receive 50 sovs, and the third 20 sovs from the stakes. Two miles and a distance. The winner of any handicap race of the value of 200 sovs, after declaration of weights, to carry 71b extra; of two or more such races, 101 b extra. Of any such handicap race of the value of 100 sovs, to carry 51b extra ; of two or more such races, Sib extra. Mr D. O'Brien's b g Fishhook, 4 yrs, 7st 12lbs 1 Mr W. Australian Cur, a sweepstake of 20 sovs each, 10 forfeit, or sif declared, with 300 added. 2} miles. Mr R. Jordan's b m Vibration, 4 yrs ... 3 The other starters were Mountaineer, Imperial, Haricot, Briseis, Spark, Stow, Aconite, Jupiter, Mary Gladsfcane, Filibuster Vibration, Spring Jack, The Deer, Evening Star.
A splendid start was effected with Haricot in front, together with Imperial and Spring Jack. The rest were all in a bunch. At the first turn the Deer came up, with Aconite, Briseis, and Calamia lying all in the middle. Mountaineer and Spark were all behind. A?ong the river turn Haricot was still leading at a great pace, the rest were all in a bunch. The Deer and Calamia began to go up at far side, aud at the back of the course all were together again. Under the hill, Haricot still held the lead, but soon gave place to Calamia, who, with Briseis and Sybil, came up at tl\e turn. There was then a splendid race along the straight. Haricot fell back beaten, and Sybil won by about four lengths in front of Calamia. Vibration, who had come up well in the last half mile, finished third, about six lengths behind Sybil. Aconite came in fourth. The field became somewhat scattered in the last half mile, and Sybil won with comparative ease. Time, 4 min This is the second fastest done.
