Discharged French soldiers have been ordered to leave Alsace and Lorraine, unless they consent lo denationalise themselves. AUSTRALIA. Sydney, March 13. A large fire occurred at Young last night; five houses were destroyed. The Commercial Bank buildings were much injured. The Bangalore left Galle to-day. Sydney, March 14. The schooner Spunkie, from Maryborough, reports speaking the barque Sydney off the Northern coast, from Hong Kong, bound for Otago, with passengers. Ten cases of small pox were reported aboard. An attempt will be made to-night by the Opposition to refuse supplies, as the Government have not the confidence of the House.

INTERPROVINCIAL. Auckland, March 13. Sailed—Rotorua, for Sydney, with eighty passengers. The German war ship Augusta steams fourteen knots, and is armed with ten Krupp guns. A large number of passengers are booked per City of New York, including Emmett and family and the Chinese giant. Considerable damage has been done to the Bay of Islands railway by the late rains, Mr Thomas Russell remains only a short time in Auckland, Thomas Newton, Waterloo hero, aged 77, has died in the hospital. The question of hanging up the Counties Act is exciting considerable public feeling in Eden County. At the Waste Lands Board meeting to-day, Mr Vesey Stuart intimated his acceptance of the Board’s terms for the purchase of ten thousand acres adjoining the Katikati settlement. The Board consented to extend the time for payment to September Ist, if required. The returns show that there are 78,539 acres in the Thames County under the administration of the Board. The first trial of the waterworks, with rain water accumulated in the Newton reservoir, was made to-day. A jst of water was thrown oy the fire brigade over a three-storey warehouse in Queen street. Mr Tole, M.H.R, addressed his constituents last night, and received a unanimous vote of confidence. The Acclimatisation Society have agreed to recommend the Governor to fix the time for the commencement of the shooting season, in the North, on May 24th, lo the end of July. Wellington, March 13. Divers have been employed all day on the wrecked hulk Eli Whitney. They to day got up the donkey engine, valued at £2OO. It is expected that other valuables will be recovered. The hulk is to be raised bodily Tenders are being called for the work. Betting is pretty even on the election. Both Travers and Hutchinson have many friends, and each side is confident of success. The figut will be a close one. The Resident Magistrate censured a policeman in Court to-day for striking a prisoner on the head with a pair of handcuffs. The man’s head was cut severely, but the public opinion is that the policeman was justified in using the handcuffs in self defence. The manner in which the plans for the Town Hall were considered and dealt with by the City Council, is causug great dissatisfaction.
