Imported Stock. —The barque Mary Ann Annison, from Newcastle, brings six ponies, which are consigned to Messrs Langdown and Co.

Cook’s Straits Cable. —At last, after much delay, the second Cook’s Straits cable has been successfully laid, not however without accident and loss of life. While the shore end was being landed the]boat capsized and one man drowned.

The New City Offices, &c.— The meeting of citizens, convened by his Worship the Mayor, for the purpose of allowing an explanation to be given of the plan proposed to be adopted to acquire Mr Morten’s section, takes place: to morrow evening. It will be held at the Oddfellows’ Hall, and as ordered at a recent meeting of the City Council certain information is now in course of preparation be laid before it.

Drainage Board.— The deputation appointed to wait on the Drainage Board, from the meeting held at Mr Clark’s rooms, met the Board at 11 a, m. The deputation was composed of the Hon J. T. Peacock, Dr Frankish, Messrs Stead, W. D. Wood, L. E. Nathan, E. B. Bishop, and J. <l llivier. After a lengthened discussion, it was resolved to send a written answer at a later period of the day. Football, —The annual general meeting of the Christchurch Football Club was held at the Commercial Hotel on Saturday even iug, when there were about forty members present, Mr J. Anderson, jun, occupying the chair. The minutes of the previous meeting having been read and confirmed, the following new members were proposed and duly elected: —Messrs G. A. Birch, J. 8. Field, S G. Gordon, Gibson, W. Millton, J. Millton, J MoKeig, IT St. Paul, G. S. Parker, J. Havens croft, and R. Wcstenra. After the treasurer had read the balance sheet for the past year, the meeting proceeded to the election of

officers. It was proposed by Mr Evans, seconded by Mr Hartland, and carried unanimously—“ That Mr Harman be reelected president.” On the motion of Mr Gordon, seconded by Mr Hartland, Mr Evans was duly elected captain. The treasurer and secretary (Messrs Gordon and Hartland) were unanimously re elected, after which the following gentlemen were chosen as a committee ; —Messrs J. Anderson, Macquarie, and James Wilkin. On the motion of Mr Evans, seconded by Mr Wilkin, it was resolved:—“That bye-law No 6 be altered and made to read as follows: — 1 That there be an annual subscription of 10s, payable to the treasurer on the first Saturday in March.’ ” It was proposed and carried—- “ That endeavours be made toohtain honorary members at an annual subscription of 1056 d.” The opening match of the season was fixed for the first Saturday in April, and a vote of thanks to the chairman and retiring officers brought the proceedings of the meeting to u close.
