THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.

To the Editor of the Globe. Sir, — Your article of the Bth instant contains the following statement“ Hitherto the suburbs have received but slight attention at the hands of the Drainage Board. Their large scheme, if it be carried out, is for the benefit of the city, although the ratepeyers in the suburbs have to bear their share of the expense.” The “ large scheme” referred to by you provides sewerage for the following districts -.—Addington, Newtown, Waltham, Philipstown, East Christchurch up to the Stanmore road, and the district to the North of Christchurch as far as the StAlbans lane, running past Hon Mr Peacock’s. Would you have any objection to state whether, as a matter of fact, and not of editorial statement. the districts I have mentioned are included within the city or, are suburbs of Christchurch. Yours, &c,, R. J. S. HARMAN, Member of the Drainage Board. March 10th, 1877.

[The districts mentioned in Mi Harman’s letter are certainly outside the town belt, but they do not include the whole of the district, for the proper of drainage of which the Board was called into existence. That the scheme is almost entirely for the benefit of the town at present is evident from the concluding paragraph of Mr Carruthers’ report—“ The sewering of the town is of course the most urgent of the works of the Board, and that to which I have given most attention. The surface drainage of the outlying districts has not, however, been overlooked, and will be specially reported on hereafter." —El). Globb.J
