They are easier now, and have been quitted at M 15s. Wanganui, March 8. A special meeting of the Harbor Board yesterday afternoon considered a letter from the harbor master, stating that the sea had broken through the south spit within a mile from the heads, and the channel can be seen about chain wide with a depth of five feet at high water, which the spring tide and the surf has made through it. A long sand spii runs out in the river about five chains, which has caused the river to silt up below the last mentioned spot, and set the current in another direction. Mr Rees, the resident engineer, stated that the cost of slopping the channel would be £1735. Mr R, W. Woon’s excursion party to the head of the Wanganui river, was turned back by the natives, after getting a considerable distance, the reasons assigned being the annoyance and insolence of the Europeans going on native lands to prospect for gold. During the year 1876 the aggregate amount sued for in the Resident Magistrate’s Court, Dunedin, was £67,946, of which £22,049 were recovered.
