THE DRAINAGE QUESTION.
The following letter has been forwarded to the chairman of the Drainage Board. It will be seen that the committee request the favor of an interview on Monday next, when it is to be hoped some definite information as to the intentions of the Board will be elicited
“ Christchurch, March Bth, 1877. “ To the Chairman uf the Drainage Board. “ Sir, —I have the honor to hand to you a copy of a resolution passed at a meeting of ratepayers within the drainage district, held at Mr Clark’s rooms, on Friday last, and which I have been deputed to forward to you. It is as follows :—‘That’this meeting is of opinion that any scheme for the drainage of Chride lurch and the surrounding districts should be comprehensive and complete, and should have accompanying it a carefully prepared estimate of the cost; and, further, it is expedient that a matter of such magnitude should not be decided on hastily, before the people interested have time to consider the question in all its bearings.’ “ In presenting this resolution, I have the honor to request that the Board will favor the committee, which I have the honor to represent, with an interview on Monday next, at 11 o’clock, on which occasion we shall be glad to receive your decision upon the following points, which will be formally brought before you : ‘ 1, As to what portion of Mr Carruthers’ report it is the intention of the Board to adopt and to immediately to carry out. (a) As regards the water closet system (J) And the removal of the sewage to the estuary. ‘2, Are the artesian wells to be stopped 1 1 3. Are the houses to be connected with the sewers by pipes ? ‘ 4. After defining the works intended to be put in hand under the system, we have to request that you will favor us with an approximate estimate of their cost.’ “ And lastly, we have respectfully to suggest that lithographed copies may be taken from Mr Bell’s plans of the city and suburbs showing Mr Carruthers’ proposed scheme, and that these, together with a printed copy of the report, may be at the disposal of the ratepayers; and that die subject shall remain in abeyance for a period of say three months from the issue of the above information.
“ That such plans and report be accompanied with any explanations the Board or their engineer may be disposed to append in illustration of their views.
“ I may say that the committee proposes to content itself at this stage by simply asking for this information. It is not their desire to enter into any discussion upon the merits of the scheme until they are more fully prepared to do so. I have, See, “J Olliviee,"
